Timing help please!

    I’ve you- tubed and followed everything to a ‘T’..... oem belt, lined up every mark and checked it twice. Continued to install everything up to the harmonic balancer, cam pulley. Went to triple check the timing and the cams are good but the crank is off. I followed the key hole in the crank pulley but was I 180 degrees out? I’ve cranked it over 6 times or better trying to match it up but nervous about starting it up tomorrow when all is said and done. All belt marks matched. So lost. Any insight? Please

    What do mean by off?

    Do you mean the mark on the belt doesn't not line up on the crank at each revolution?

    Those marks on the belt will only line up at one position, after you install the belt, it may take several dozens of revolutions to get back to that same position.

    But that doesn't matter. What matters is that your cams line up with their marks and the crank lines up with its marks. The marks on the belt itself are just to make sure you have the right tension between components.

    Also remember, the crank and cams will not line up with every revolution, its a four cycle engine. It will take TWO revolutions of your crank shaft to make the cams rotate once, or in other words, every other full rotation of your cams, will result in your crank being 180º off.

    The important thing is that everything lines up at top dead center.

    Also, as long as you can turn it over by hand without resistance, you aren't going to hurt anything by trying to turn it over. The danger with timing is that if its off enough that the pistons will hit the valves....but if you can crank it over a few times by hand without hitting anything, your good to go (timing may still be off but your not going to smash your valves)

    Aerindel eased my worries. After reading his reply I clued in that I’d have to turn the crank quite a few times before reaching tdc etc. Valves aren’t tagging any pistons. Not a mechanic by any means but I’m stubborn enough to try most things, considering how much Toyota wanted to do this job. Thanks again for the replies guys.

    Not yet. Have to work my way from the cam covers out now. Hopefully it’s done today with all the running around I still have to do.

    Still a bunch of work and head scratching to come. Biggest and most nerve racking thing I’ve ever attempted. I miss my ‘82 Chevy for ease but love this truck. 7 years and it doesn’t owe me a penny!

    Same I picked up my 05, and the previous owner didn’t know if the timing belt had been done so I decided to go ahead, and do it. Wanted to do the cam seals, but after finding out the procedure requires removing the cam completely ( also received cam seals for the older models) so decided to go by the if it’s not broke don’t fix it. I’m pretty much at the same point as you. Going to get back after it today.

    Glad I decided to do it because I found it had been done, and a few things were not quite right.
    .
    Timing belt tensioner pulley bracket was missing the plate washer spacer. Whoever did it used a piece of a cotter pin wedged in it to space it. Also whoever did it removed the front cam bearing cap, and applied RTV to all the groves which from what I understand are there for oil to return to the valve cover.

    I finished mine today, and am now on to finding an annoying tick. I believe it’s the exhaust manifold. Anyways hope it’s going smooth!
