Tundra starts then dies. Wondering if truck is not recognizing key but I only have 1 key. Truck will eventually start after cranking it over for extended time. Anyone else have this problem?

any codes?? I would start by reading the codes with a techstream. A regular obd reader doesn't pick up all the codes

With nothing else to go on that sounds like a fuel delivery problem. But I've also had electrical (battery, alternator, bad ground) do similar stuff.

My '07 did this about 2 years ago, it turned out to be the key and the fuel pump.
Both were replaced, and I have not had a single problem since then.

I figure if it’s the key why would eventually start and run? Just brainstorming. I really have nothing to add other than: I agree it sounds like a fuel delivery issue.

Yes, and I keep the second key (brown?) in my center console because of it. As soon as the first key (black) does it I just reach for the other one. I've never attempted to keep cranking to see if the black will eventually work, sorry.

I don’t think it’s fuel related. No codes. It seems it does not start if I leave keys in ignition. In the morning it starts every time when keys are taken out over night. In the middle of harvest so no time to trouble shoot.

My '07 did this on occasion. The system would not recognize the key and would just turn over. I would take the key out and flip it over and it would start. There was a code that was thrown, it was an issue with one of the computers. My mechanic stuck a printout in the glove box just in case anything ever happened I could give it to a mechanic/dealer so they would know. I never got it fixed as my truck was totaled before I got to it.

Mine never threw a code, and it would always start right up in the morning. The starting problem always showed up when it was parked hot, and I attempted to re-start a few minutes later.

    Hope that helps.

Mine would also do it when hot, usually after towing or hauling a load. I no longer have that printout but I believe it did have to do with the anti theft system.

Yep my 2007 TSS did this one day and I freaked out as I had just bought it.

I went in and got my second key and it fired right up. I did try the key that "failed" and it worked just fine, so not sure what causes it.

Definitely get yourself a new key programmed.

I think this just happened to me. I just got done changing the oil, left the key in it the whole time and it started and died 5-6 times. Took key out and started and stayed running the 2nd try.

    Thanks for this post guys!

Please let us know if the offending key was/is a Mama Toyota factory key.

It could be a dirty IAC sensor. Had this exact prollem wid da in-law and her accord...it would start then die. Tried with all different keys, still the same; even changed out the ignition switch to no avail.

Checked IAC inside intake toob, was durty. Cleaned wiff IAC cleaner and its all good.

Check that, it could be it...being the truck is a 2007...maybe it was nevar cleaned.
