Postponing Tundra purchase for a 2021 model?

The third gen is a second gen gussied up. Every major system is the same as a second gens. There is nothing notable that’s new ona 2014+. That being said the 2007s didn’t have any real issues.

 

Hopefully next gen is in 2021 and not 2022.

 

I work at the plant. I'm hearing murmurs of aluminum body parts. Not exactly sure which ones though. Hybrid system for torque. I have no desire for hybrids, turbos and complicated things associated with them. I bought mine for reliability and availability of parts down the road as I repair my own vehicles.

Explain how being upside down on a 2016, and then buying a new 2019 which will even more aggressively depreciate makes sense?

It's looking like model year 2022. Even people that are higher ups like department managers aren't sure as Japan isn't really saying much. I do notice that ecoat is doing some evaluations of the solution chemistry. Some are speculating because of aluminum parts.

Most are skeptical that it would be 2021 as there hasn't been talk of retooling as 2021 model is only a year away. A sheet metal press die has 6 months lead time alone.

If I'm still there, I'll get some pics of the new model after they have been assembled and share. Can't post pics of inside the plant without explicit permission.

I'm just a contractor. A good friend of mine who is a paint specialist was telling me to wait because he thought the new model would bring down the prices of the used market like it did on the new Rav4. I shopped around and considered mine for over a year. I wasn't waiting 2 more. My plans are to keep this one till I sell it to the scrap yard or hit the lottery and get a 1794 4WD.

I love my 2018. I personally wouldn't wait. I'd prefer to have my "dinosaur".

 

The 5.7 will be missed if they scrap it for a V6.

Just buy a used one now, then you won’t feel bad when the brand new model comes out. That was my solution when in the market a few weeks ago, so far pleased with my 17 CPO purchase at what I perceived as a good price.

I played the latest and greatest truck game with Fords for years and boy does it feel good to be back in a Toyota...

 

Tell you what if this hybrid can drive under electric power and get something like 100kms to a charge before you need to switch to the gas - im in. The charge for a chevy volt to drive 100 km is less than $1. Currently in my awesome hungry 5.7 i get max 600kms on almost $100 of gas. Thats substantial savings.

 

Yeah, I pretty much agree with all of that. Toyota isn’t really “breaking ground” with any auto tech. Look at the Supra.

 

They are going Hybrid for a smaller engine to help maintain the torque more so than battery charge run time and switching over. It's CAFE standards just to say they are complying to heading toward a goal. People don't buy Tundras these days for a 6 cylinder, they buy F150s. Toyota is going to test the market with to get the MPG up. But a wet dream would be a turbo 5.7 like a Raptor killer

 

Same, I was holding out for the next gen but ended up with a 2018. While still a bit dated compared to Ford/Ram, there were a good amount of upgrades from my 2008. I'm probably one of the few that actually like the Safety Sense upgrades and haven't had any issues. The push button start and carplay/android upgrades on the 2020 would've been nice to have too (though I like the 1 bump key start better, and it's dumb that they only put the keyless unlock on the front 2 doors).

My old job had me driving insane miles, 40K or so a year- that 16 was about to roll over to 100k and take a big dip in depreciation. I needed to sell it before it hit 100k and pay the difference in owed vs value- if it hit 100k it would have been a bloodbath.

2019 isn't depreciating any worse than any other model year tundra and has way less miles on it than one of my trucks normally would after owning it for 3 months

 

You got a Volt? I heard they did really well but GM either killed it or pushing out new Volt with updated tech for even more range.

 

Mercedes Benz built an inline 4 cylinder 2.0L Turbo Charged engine that puts out 416 HP and 389 ft lbs. of torque. I think Toyota can do much better in building something groundbreaking in Modern Engines.

 

I've been waiting since 2014 for a true redesign. The only thing I am sure of this time is that I will likely be disappointed again.

I sure was in 2014.... I no longer need one for work so I am content with waiting a bit longer. I keep everything I own for at least 15 years then give it away to one of the family members. I'll likely only own 1 or 2 more so I'll make it count.

 

2021 or 2022 will likely see me in the market for a newer truck. I don't see myself buying a brand new one though unless 1 of 3 things happen: Prices come down on new trucks, incentives for financing are too good to turn down or I start making a ton of money. The local dealership has the 2020's on their lot now. An SR5 starts in the mid 40 thousands, a TRD Off Road is the low 50 thousands.

As it stands, I'm not overly impressed with the TSS stuff so I'm not really interested in anything newer than 2017 anyways.

 

Yipper. I'm not spending that kind of money ever again on a vehicle. Let someone else eat the initial depreciation

 

I wanted to buy a pre-2018 for the same reasons you mention but it was hard for me to find something with low enough miles for the price. A lot of 2017 trucks i saw were close enough to new prices (high 30's or more)

 

This week I read an article about Toyota pumping about $300m into the Texas plant over the next two years to upgrade the production line. The same article said that there is talk of the Tundra and Tacoma sharing a modular platform to help streamline production. I'm thinking this means we will see the new Tundra in 2022 and a new Tacoma maybe in '23.

 

wait until 2099 when cars become obsolete like buying horses +100 yrs ago. when was last time someone went to horse dealership for purchase of personal transportation? give me the biggest horse you got for towing my boat and fit family of 5

 

Same with my 2016 Taco. It was in 5 times for unscheduled issues in the first 30,000 miles. It was a slap in the face to what blind brand loyalty and trust can do to you. I'd be very, very hesitant to buy the next Gen Tundra when it comes out.

 

I just bought (and will take delivery of tomorrow) a 2020 Tundra. I was kind of painted into a corner and needed a half-ton truck immediately and we got a great deal since this is the 4th Toyota we've bought from the same dealer in the last 15 months. I don't regret it, even knowing that a new Tundra is coming. We got a lease with the intention that in three years we will re-evaluate where we're at and decide if we're keeping it or getting something newer. If the new Tundra blows my socks off, I might go for it at that time. If not, maybe I'll finally get the $70k GMC Duramax that I've always wanted.

And it we no longer need a full size truck, maybe Toyota will have a turbo 4 or something cool like that in a 6th gen 4R.

 

Wait for 2021 to come out and hopefully there are steep discounts to get rid of the 2020 inventory. Buy the 2020.
