So my first tundra experience isn't going too hot by the looks of things... Being the paranoid person I am I changed the oil waaaay early to check on things (650 miles after my first initial change when I bought it). There seems to be a fair amount of very small metal shavings. Can see it best pooled in the front of the pan :/ of course any hint of a warranty is gone and I know Toyota corporate is gonna tell me to shove it, but I might try anyway. Makes no sense, dealer maintained it's entire life with records. 111k almost fully interstate miles on the 5.7. I like the truck, but Im not so sure on this 5.7 engine anymore... Hoping you all can give me some insight or if by chance this is normal (yeah right) it'll ease my mind. Biggest purchase of my life is a turd less than 1k into it. This is why I drive beaters lmao. And yes, the oil catch pan was cleaned and brand new. The filter looks to be free of anything at all as well, just the stuff in the oil itself

Very confused. Your truck has 111k miles on it, you've owned it for 650 miles, but you believe you know the history of how the truck was used for the first 110k miles? Did you purchase from a dealer? Was there anything on the drain plug?

The big question, Does it still run good? I am not sure it ready to be condemned yet.

There are labs to get your oil tested if you still have it. Blackstone is one, request a sample kit.

Search for "cam tower leak" and then go check to see if yours has possibly had the repair done. There will be a black sealant instead of gray on the cam towers. People have reported metal shavings in the oil after having the repair done, so that may be the culprit. Not a big deal if the repair was done correctly, but you might just want to do more-frequent oil changes until the shavings are gone.

You're confident that your drain pan is kept in a sterile environment? My drain pan sits directly under my work bench, it could have anything from metal shavings, to saw dust, to HDPE shavings in it.
IMHO you're overthinking this, unless you can confirm that your drain pan is kept in a hermetically sealed container.

If you're really concerned then send the oil into the lab.

I have all the history documented from day one, everything done at New Country Toyota in New York. No, I didn't see anything on the drain plug though

It runs fantastic, plenty of power and good oil pressure. There's a tick I noticed it has on the driver's side though. But I've been told over and over by a bunch of people it's normal. Sounds pretty much exactly like this one, maybe a little quieter https://youtu.be/6qZZyflSDgo

I just bought the pan today, and sprayed the hell out of it with brake clean and wiped it down before draining the oil drain. Could it be just random environmental crap in there? Sure. But I'm just not confident in that. Especially being shiny flakes

I'll take a look when I get home, nothing on the records for that. Biggest repair I saw was a water pump at 97k. But I'll definitely check it out! Thanks

My '07 had 270,000 undocumented miles on it when I purchased it, ZERO service records. I SeaFoamed the gas and oil right away and drove approximately 500 miles before changing the oil, filter and plugs. I SeaFoamed the oil again and drove another 500 miles before changing the oil & filter again. I am at 287k and I am changing the O&F every 5K... the mechanically loud 5.7 runs stronger than ever and I drive the crap out of it.

This is what I'm hoping for. I've had nothing but Toyotas for years and they've all been reliable as a hammer, this one is making me nervous. But I'm just gonna try not to think about it too much, I'll enjoy it until something goes bang I guess. If it ever even does

The ticking sound is the lifters on the engine. I have been told by many mechanics that it is normal for many V8 Toyota engines. My sister had a 2000 4.6 V8 with 50000 when she bought it and now has 300000+ miles on it. My '07 with 190000 miles and my '14 with 88000 miles, tick too. I wouldn't worry too much about the ticking.
I would have the oil tested if you suspect something is wrong. These engines are Toyota reliable, though not infallible.

When you change the oil , send it for testing. May be it should relieve the tension

I just bought my '08 Tundra a few months ago. My 5.7L is almost to 367k miles. It runs great!

I did have to replace a transmission shift solenoid and the transfer case, but I was able to purchase the truck pretty cheap and fix it myself with a few known problems.

Doesnt the drain plug have a magnet on it just for this purpose? My 05 Tacoma did. I haven't changed the oil myself on my 17 tundra dealer does that. I'd think if the plug didn't have anything on it you should be fine.

My 1uz Lexus ticks like mad, I just gotta get used to living with all the toyota v8s doing it I guess. Coming from a first gen 2.7 tacoma that runs like a top and dead silent at 222k its been quite the adjustment to the noisier side.

Sometimes the high milers are the best ones. Ive had great luck with almost all of my high mileage buys. Sad part is literally every "low" miler Ive owned to this point have been garbage for me. Hoping Im not keeping the track record going with this one. Hope yours keeps on kicking!

I loved my Taco with the 2.7, it was adequate power for the size of the truck. Don't get me wrong, my 3.0 supercharged was awesome too. Both were manual transmissions so really fun to drive. I will say, on my second Tundra, and I am happy with the purchases. I would still have my '07 had it not been for the drunk driver.

I say give it some time. Keep an eye on it and if it looks like it’s getting worse trade it in before it’s useless. But I doubt that’s going to happen. Maybe someone galled up the threads on the drain plug. If it’s not in your filter I think you’re good to go. Just go out and enjoy.

oil filter should catch most small particles, and drain plug may be magnetized to catch anything extra. Engine and trans do wear down over time. I dont think it needs to be traded in though. New truck = new payment. Drive it!!!

I think it’s easy to work up a case of paranoia on any vehicle issue. Forums are extremely helpful, but they can also keep you up at night if you spend too much time searching. The 5.7 is a solid engine, and not just used in the Tundra either. Toyota’s brand is built on reliability. You’ll be alright. 111k ain’t nothing for a Yota.
