Turn on lights when locking the door

I just got my truck. I am trying to figure out how to get the headlights to turn on when i hit the lock or unlock button on my key so i can see when i am walking near my truck

 

Check the settings in the stereo. There are some car settings in there.

 

Need more info about the truck. I have a sr5. My trucks lights do not come on with the remote. Only the amber daytime driving lights come on for about 10 seconds. Perhaps the limited and higher models do. Others will have to inform you if they do or not.

 

I think you can customize vehicle options with the settings app on the head unit.

What year is your truck? More specifically, what headlights do you have?
If you have the 18-19 LED headlights w/ DRL's, you might be able to change the settings using TechStream to have the DRL's come on. There's not a setting to have the headlights come on.

 

No tundra has this feature from factory.

 

My cargo lights come on when I unlock the truck it’s very handy when loading/unloading things at night.

 

Only 2014+ 1794 and platinum trucks have exterior lights with puddle lamps in the mirrors. 2007 to 2013 truck that had memory package also had puddle lamps.

 

Thats crazy. Gm cars have had this forever. Its really nice when the headlights and tailings light up when you hit lock or unlock on the remote. The last 2 days i have litterally been looking for my truck in the dar . I guess im going to have to replace all interior and the bed lights with LED. Anyone know a kit for our truck or should i just go to ebay and hope to get lucky(thats where ive went in the past on other vehicles)

 

How did you get the amber lights to come on when locking/unlocking? Mine don't and I don't see anything in the settings in the head unit.

 

Mine do as well. I will look into it. I also like that there is an audio alert that is not a freaking horn blast. I drove my sisters Gran Cherokee this weekend and the horn going off is ANNOYING!

 

You can also add VLeD puddle lights wired to your cargo light. Easy mod and cost about 60 bucks total.

 

Yep, GM's had the obnoxious 'horn-blast' for years too.

 

My amber lights are my daytime running lights they come on for about 10 seconds when I use the remote. It came that way from the factory I suppose . I did nothing to get them to function this way.

 

Interesting. Did you buy yours new? I got mine used, so maybe the original owner had them turned off at the dealer. I'll have to see if there's a way to reactivate that feature. Thanks for the info.

 

Yes I bought it new. I have the exact same truck you do. Same color, same year, sr5 trd. This is odd..?? I thought there was a option to have with and without daytime running lights. Do you have the amber daytime running lights on the inboard side of the headlight next to the grill?

 

I've noticed the amber running lights recently on a few trucks. Assumed the driver was running their parking lights. Mine is a 2019 but I have white led Nike swoosh DRL's.

 

I have a 2018 Limited and it has a setting in the radio to leave my lights on after turn the truck off. You can choose up to 90 seconds i believe. Or you can do like someone else suggested and put the lights on for your running boards. I tapped into the footwell light.

 

So thinking about this a bit more...
Theoretically, if you have the LED headlights, I think you could tap into your puddle lamp power and run that power to a diode, to your headlight low-beam power (wire) near the hl.
That would mean of course anytime your puddle lamp are on for locking/ unlocking, so too would the low beams.

All that said, I would defer to @iHacker (the headlight harness master) for his thoughts.

Yes. Those are on as drl's anytime the truck is running. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but the original owner also had a Viper alarm/remote starter installed.
Also, I was thinking about it and purchased a Carista Bluetooth OBD2 adapter that lets you change some of the factory settings. Hopefully those lights being on when you lock/unlock is one of them...
