got a buddies tundra at the house. The truck clunks something fierce when changing direction. Only does it once per change (reverse to drive then brakes. Etc), does not happen over bumps

The truck is pretty rusty. Almost sounds like lower control arms but I can’t get any play when I have it up on a. Rack. Just kinda scratching my head at this point.

It’s an 07 extended cab (I think) long bed. 4.7l.

This is what I’m working with rust wise

    Sounds like driveshaft
issues- a bad u joint, a worn out diff, etc. Does the Tundra have support bearings on the driveshaft? Cause that'll do it too.

Yes. I’ve never heard a carrier bearing do this but I see how it could. I’ll look into it.
Whenever I change direction and then hit the brakes. It really is an odd one.

Holy crap! Seeing this makes me grateful to live in Texas and not in the rust belt.

I’m a firm believer that this truck was involved in a flood. It looks like flood related rust. And to top it off the truck was from Texas until 2012. So something happened at one point I bet

I cross streams all the time with my tundra and it doesn't rust like that. That rust is from the North East where they use chemicals to treat the road in the winter, that or the flood was from the ocean water.

I could see that being the case but it would have to have been on the coast. I've seen vehicles like that from people who live on the coast. Or it was driven on the beach (probably multiple times) without a spray down afterwards.
But, I'm 300 miles away from the coast so theres no salt in the air.

If it does it when you hit the brakes that could be a lot of things. If it clunks with your foot on the brake and you go from drive to reverse, that's driveshaft. What you describe could be caliper mounts, a loose caliper or backing plate, etc. Have someone stand out side and tell you if it's coming from the front or rear.

Checked the calipers. That was my first thought. Had it up on the rack at work to look for wear marks from metal on metal. Can’t find any play in anything. It’s got me stumped. Rains been making it hard for me to look at it the past week
Oh regular water won’t do this I know. I have a feeling it was involved in a hurricane related flood or possibly used to launch boats in salt water. The history after 2012 goes silent till 2017 for a timing belt. (This is going off Toyota’s TIS since I have access to it)
