I set myself up with some cool 6 spoke 18" OEM Sequoia rims that I powder coated black. Went to the alignment shop and they quickly called back with bad news. Short story I bought and am installing a new rack. struts, lower control arms, driveshaft boots and sundry items. The rack was bleeding at both ends and I have been experiencing a sort of grabbing feeling in my steering so this could make sense. Kind of like when you're running out of fluid and it boosts on and off when trying to go around a tight corner. But more horrifying was the huge leak below my power steering. Seems this was the real problem.
I know I'm being lazy by asking before tearing into it, but I was wondering what kind of things typically go wrong with them and what are the cures? What should I look for first? Also is it practical to rebuild the pump or do you guys typically just replace the assembly. I know sometimes it's easier. Like the rack, I don't want to rebuild it. Much easier to get a new assembly. Any pre-investigation advice?
Thank you for taking the time to read and consider my post.

So you are going to do the work yourself?

That is great if you are able to.

Grab some poly bushings for the steering rack.

Why do you think the lower arms need to be replaced? Are the bushings shot?

Yeah, I try to do most of the things myself.
Good suggestion on the bushings. I'll have to think about that.
The arms are fine, but the center sleeve of the bushings was way off center. The rubber has cold-flowed and they need to be replaced. I talked to the suspension guy and checked the prices. Not much more for the whole assembly which then saves the trouble of removing and pressing in new bushings. The suspension guy said they get frozen with rust sometimes. And one needs the correct bits for the press to remove them. I just felt more comfortable with the Toyota assembled bushings in the control arm. And I got my parts at a great discount at Camelback For about $60 more a side, I was happy to get the assemblies. I'm getting too hold to beat on steel for hours.
