Hey all! So my wife and I finally took the plunge, after a year of talking, and are snagging a new Travel Trailer. We finish the paperwork on Saturday. My Tundra is a 2018 SR5 Crewmax, with a sticker payload capacity of 1265 pounds. It has the 36 gallon gas tank (or 38? Can't remember which).

I've walked through the math, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right. Y'all seem to be pretty good at this, so I wanted someone to sanity check me if possible!

The GVWR on the TT is 7600lbs (5545 dry weight + 2055 cargo weight). I don't really have 2055 pounds of stuff to load into it, but I'm using the total combined weight anyhow.

The links claims the tongue weight is 596lbs, but unless I'm just misunderstanding how this all works, I think it's probably closer to 988 (7600 * 13%. Is 13% the right percentage of weight on the tongue?).

My hitch is the equal-i-zer 4 point sway, which had a shipping weight of 108lbs. So total tongue weight would be ~1096 pounds.

    1265lbs - 1096lbs = 169lbs left over.

That's... close. Really close. My wife could ride with me, but everything else has to stay in the trailer. I'm concerned that buying this RV could be mistake, with the weight that close together. I'd like to buy a generator as well, but I dunno if that's possible with such a small payload left over.

What do y'all think? Is this too much trailer for my Tundra? If so, I'll either need to go back to the drawing board on finding one, or get more Truck...

The new SAE J2807 standard includes 300 lbs for the people and 75 lbs for a WDH.

Most TT tongue weight is around 9-10%.

The only real way to find out the actual tongue weight is to use a tongue scale. You can order one from Walmart for pretty cheap.

By doing the math at 9%, your in the 684 lb area. It might be a little more depending on how the trailer is loaded and the LDH is set up. You have a kick ass hitch. I had one and wore it out after many years of use (and some abuse).

Personally, I would get more truck or a smaller trailer.

Awesome! I really appreciate the reply @ColoradoTJ, as always your response is very helpful. After I got finished completely botching the numbers in my first post, I was starting to get nervous that I had made some huge mistake =D I didn't realize that there was 300lbs accounted for in people AND some extra weight for the WDH. I just assumed they expected me to be a skinny 150lbs lol.

Even on the low end, being in the 684# range would make me feel a lot better, because even if that number were off by 50% it's STILL lower than my first number.

Unfortunately my local walmart doesn't carry that specific weight thingy, and I don't quite have enough time between now and Sat to have one ordered, so tomorrow I'm going to go hunting around town for one, or something similar. I'll also check and see if the dealership that I bought this thing from (camping world) has one on hand that they'd let me use.

Again, I definitely appreciate the response!

What is the make and model of the trailer?

Well that is definitely a little smaller than my trailer, but it worked my Tundra pretty good.

Good thing you are at low elevation, pretty flat where you live, should be good by the numbers.

This is true. Most of the places I'll be using it should be pretty flat. With that said, while I don't plan on taking it into the mountains proper, I do have family up in the Tennessee/North Alabama area where it can get properly hilly. Interstate driving 90% of the way, and no steep grades that I'm aware of, but something tells me as I get closer to the foothills I'm going to really start to feel that trailer behind me, huh?

Oh you will feel it, trust me. Always remember that this is a turtle race...slow and steady wins the race.

The Tundra is a great truck. Trust the product the engineers put out and a great track record to back it up.

You don’t have a 1 ton diesel, not the headaches and cost that goes with it.
