So I have ordered some 1/2” thick hardwood to put on my ceiling. I’m going to go straight to the bottom of the trusses that are 16” on center. Anyone think this will be a problem? My buddy that sold it to me tells me no that a lot of people are doing this. B213B66A-1758-427D-9D0D-231BCB5D395A.jpg

Took me a week to get this up, and several days for finish work. Not shown at the cedar bar stools I made or the black mesh tarp sunscreen for the back wall. Cuts out 70 percent of the sun when it’s hot.

A few things to consider. Most wood ceilings are installed using 16’ length tongue and groove wood. The benefit is less joints and less cuts. A few questions I have for your wood floor product. Is the flooring an engineered floor? Is it typically meant to be glued down or a free floating? If the wood is an engineered floor it’s typically not nailed down. So installing it on your ceiling is likely to give you issues. The other thing to consider is engineered floors have to acclimate to the climate of the area you are installing them. Is this an A/C climatized area? I personally would go with a conventional wood ceiling. It will make the install a lot easier. The other bigger issue I would be worried about is you may be using a product on your ceiling that is designed for flooring and not meant to be nailed in place. This may not allow the floor to move with expansion and contraction likely it could when installed on the floor. I hope this helps. Best of luck with your project.

The flooring is meant to be nailed down, but one big problem is that they will not fall on 16” centers. I don’t think this is going to work. I guess it’s back to Spruce board.

If it’s not 16” O.C. it’s going to be a pain to install. How many square feet is the area? Is this for an inside or outside ceiling?

Getting ready to get some quotes for a new roof. Question is to go asphalt or steel? I'm also considering getting solar installed too. Does that count?

I tried my green thumb out today, I have never done any kind of landscaping before today. So my question is mulch or rock?

The benefit of using rock is it’s less maintenance and it last longer. Mulch can wash out where your downspouts are during heavy rains. Rock is at least 3 times more expensive. The mulch can help retain more moisture though. Just don’t buy the rock from Home Depot or Lowe’s in the bags. It’s usually a lot better pricing at a stone supply yard. Some places will delivery it for you. Saving you a lot of labor and time. Best of luck with your landscaping project.

Just a suggestion for the weed barrier. Make sure you use the landscape staples to secure the edges down before the stone or mulch. D63538B6-A6EB-409B-93B2-63FC777163A2.jpg

I work in the solar business, used to be a roofer. When you say you are considering asphalt vs steel, do you mean corrugated steel that screws down, or standing seam?

If you can afford standing seam, definitely go that route. Among the many benefits (longevity, highest wind uplift resistance, etc.) It is also ideal for attaching solar panels. There are clamps with setscrews that attach to the seams so there are no penetrations in your new roof.

I’m assuming standing seam. I’ve only just begun to look into different options. My wife isn’t to keen on the steel look, but I’ve seen panels out there that have an asphalt texture to them.

We live in a pretty windy area of IL and I don’t want to have to deal with having to replace shingle tabs.

You can't go wrong with standing seam.

Just make sure to tell your roofer that you plan to install solar panels after the roof is done. Reason being they will need to install their cleats closer together than they normally might, and so they will need to use more than they normally would. Many roofers generally install cleats every 18"-24" on the male side of each roof panel, but if your going to install solar after, you'll want them to be somewhere around 12"-14" apart. There is a formula based on the wind speed in your area. Your roofer should know how to calculate the cleat spacing, but he or she will need to know that solar will likely be installed on the roof.

Is this for a replacement roof or new construction? What’s the pitch or slope of your roof? If your replacing an existing roof, what kind of roof do you have currently?

I have a stone supply not to far and I have a dump trailer, I’m definitely a bulk buyer. I ran all of my down spouts in 3” pvc all the way to the road so no wash out. I going to go with stone if I can find something I like(black or maybe the color of the house). I have never seen the tie downs for the weed barrier, thanks.

It’s always nice when your have the downspouts diverted away from the home. If you plan to do any low voltage lighting down the road you can run the wiring before you place the rocks.

Looks like weed barrier. Keeps weeds/grass from growing through mulch or rocks. I did this last year. Removed about 6 inches of mulch previous owner had added. I put river rocks down. Nice colors when wet

I've seen those, I like the Mangrate too. I happen to have a cast grill thing from a white elephant years ago. Its flat griddle on one side and bar grills on the other, made by Lodge. Tried it on a few thin steaks and they cooked fast.
