So after 46k miles, I am finally replacing my battery. I'm going back with OEM because I can't complain about getting almost 50k out of a stock battery. I drive my truck almost EVERY.SINGLE.DAY....with cranking it about an average of 2-4 times a day. Surprisingly, Toyota OEM is only $115. On a side note...I may be looking for another wife per the text listed below.

*Of course I'm not getting rid of my wife. I married WAY out of my league!*

The only time I ever had batteries fail for no good reason is because I let a vehicle sit too long between outings.
Regularly driving them a reasonable distance is good for all the systems on your vehicle including the battery.
Now that I'm retired and not driving to work every day I have to leave vehicles on a tender which helps extend the battery's life just a bit.

What charger is that, Jonesy? You need to get you a short, ring-terminal cord and run the SAE connector end to an inconspicuous location. Then, you can avoid having to open/close the hood to disconnect/reconnect. ;)

Look at the NorthStar AGM batteries. (Nine Tundras.com group buys) They are flat plate AGM where Optima is spiral-wound AGM cells.

Then buy a CTEK Multi US 7002 charger ("low and slow") if you think you'll ever need to charge it or need a maintenance charger on it.

From other forums/FB pages I'm on, OEM is the way to go for price and what I'm doing. If I was running some other things like winches/lights/etc on my truck, then I would look into more high end batteries.

I bought this at Home Depot online several years ago. I killed a couple of batteries by letting my Tundra sit without being driven.
This unit does have the pig tail and I've installed it on my battery in lieu of using the clips pictured here.
I was a-scared that the wires would chafe on metal somewhere and cause me another issue so I merely open the hood and hook-r-up.
A battery tender is a must have for vehicles like mine that sit for days on end ~ it's cheap insurance against premature battery death.

Check out this thread (link below). Your battery appears to have failed exactly on schedule (18-30 months for a 2017) as have 36% in the limited data sample. There are two overlapping statistical curves represented by this data imo...2014-2016 with longer battery life, 2017-2019 with shorter life. My 2017 battery failed at 25 months, 3600 miles, even with diligent maintenance charging.

Battery life is typically time dependent rather than mileage dependent. Use improves your battery's longevity rather than wearing it out; i.e. your frequent usage helped your battery to last as long as it did. Toyota, like Walmart, sells them cheap. You can begin planning your next battery expenditure now...July 2021. :D

    A LOT... NEVER ENDS
In my 14 Tundra, my battery died on the 62k (62,115 to be precise) mark. Date stamp on the OEM was 02/2014. WAAAAAAYYYYYY SHOCKED to see that date, especially shocked after reading on here how crappy they are. I got a yellow topper which I had in my taco and it did me good

Wow. That is low mileage. Average of 144 miles per month. I have seem some threads on high mileage; wondering if that is the "low."

Production of 2014s started around August 2013, so the 02/2014 date on the battery confirms it was an original OEM battery, midyear or late. I would need a replacement date to share your excitement, but if it was this year, 60 months IS incredible these days. :D

I don’t think it’s a problem your battery is “leaking out the caps now”, that’s just a battery’s way of off-gassing the vapors within each cell. You want this to happen and it happens in summer time or if you leave a battery tender on too long. If you pop the cap while a battery is charging, you’ll see them “fizzing” inside...

Sometimes it’s bad enough you have to refill the cells, with distilled water...

I think it varies by condition. Here in SE TX, it's very hot and humid. Every OEM Toyota battery I've had, Tundra or not, garaged or not, has failed within 2 years due to leaking, including my 2018.

I've had good luck with the advance auto AGM batteries for $~170. Half the price of Northstar and 3 year straight replacement, out of the 5 I've bought over the years only 1 needed replacement at 30 months.

Have you tried refilling with distilled water when you notice this “leaking”. Unless a battery is cracked, they don’t leak, they off-gas...and sometimes require refilling, with distilled water and not all the way to the top, just to cover the metal plates inside.

I've been using them on a motorcycle and now my Tundra for many years.
So far, so good. Letting a vehicle sit for long periods of time will kill a good battery every time.

Never thought about that, is that what also causes the "furry" corrosion on the terminals?

Yup, overflow. You may have been experiencing dry cells which made your batteries take a crap. No water for the transfer of electrons = dry cell = battery failure. You don’t wanna over fill em tho, other wise you’ll be boiling over all the time. You wanna pop the caps and make sure there’s liquid just covering the lead plate within, which is about 1/2” below the hole you’re looking thru. Always use distilled water, less contaminants.

There shouldn't be any corrosion from leakage if you're buying AGM batteries. They are completely sealed, maintenance free, and leakproof.
