Cooper's or BFG

Type of driving? Mostly highway, in town, or off-road? Just got a 19 Tundra SR5 TRD Off Road. Installing a Toytec 3-1 leveling kit and putting new skins on. Done a lot of research, you may want to consider Nitto Ridge Grappler, or Terra Grappler. Many colleagues at work run either one, and they have nothing but good comments. I'm leaning towards the Ridge Grappler 295 70 R18. Good luck with your decision.

I have 25000 miles on my K02's and have a set of ST maxx waiting to go on tomorrow. Having a balance issue with the k02's and the wet weather traction is steadily getting worse. Overall I'd say the BFG have been disappointing

 

It’s just sucks 20” wheels have better size options than a 17” wheel, I prefer a skinny and tall tire. The only skinny tall tire for a 17” wheel is 315/70/17, 12.4 wide. 20” wheel has 275/65/20 a 34” tall tire, 10.8 wide like the stock 275/55/20. Anyways, I would go with the KO2’s if you Offroad a lot, street queen try the Michelin defender tire.

 

Ko2s for sure, I got 70,000 on my first set and prob could have ran them another 5k if I had to but, I just replaced with a new set before winter. 305/65/18. Great in rain and snow.

 

I’ve run the cooper AT with good results but now I run the Falken AT3 and love them. I do live off road so I need a good tire. South Dakota has crazy, unpredictable weather so I need something that fits those needs

Love my st maxx. Also years ago I had ko2s on an explorer and I swore I had over 50,000 miles with minimal wear

 

When the time comes, I'm going to give the xlts a try.

There seems to be a common theme of wet traction issues with the k02s, which is a deciding factor for me.

I have also read some negative reviews of the xlts on one ton trucks, regarding accelerated wear though...

 

I’ve run AT/KOs and KO2s on multiple trucks for over 20 year and like them for their long tread wear and durability. I’ve had nails in them without knowing, and they still held air. But they’re not good in mud (need a real mud terrain for that) and they were slippery on wet roads. As their tread wore on over the miles, they got more slippery on wet roads. After 50K miles, they still had good tread, but became dangerously slippery on wet surfaces. Also, none of the sets I ever had could balance well.

This time I went with Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs, mainly because they were cheaper. I like how they look and so far they do well on wet roads, but they’re still relatively new with only a few thousand miles on them. I haven’t taken them off-road yet, though. So I don’t know how they’ll perform in mud or going up steep ascents. As far as balance, at first they rode smooth as glass, but after about 50-100 miles I noticed a bad shimmy at 55-65 mph. The shimmy is worse than the slight shimmy I’ve had with every set of BFGs I’ve had. I need to take it back in for re-balancing. Just haven’t had time yet. I guess time will tell on tread life and wear.

The one thing I HATE about my KO2s is that rocks [on gravel roads and lots] get picked up by them worse than any tire I have ever owned: and then, they get thrown up at my truck at 60 miles per hour. I miss my Coopers.

 

My Cooper ST Maxx's did the same thing. The more open the tread the bigger the rocks. This is why I am keeping mud flaps.

 

KO2s! I’ve got at least 100,000 miles in then on 5 different trucks in 10 different countries.

I have never got a flat. Well, except that one time but can’t really blame BFG.

 

Well I've had my XLTs for about a month and am now on vacation in the SW (UT, CO, and now NM). Did some off-roading around Ouray, and on the south side of the Canyonlands area and near Hovenweep. Loose over hardpack, some sticky clay, dry clay with dust and loose rocks, and some sand/gravel. In this short time, I find myself very impressed. I've used BFGs since the 90s and just took a chance on these, (they can't be worse than BFGs in sand so what can I lose?) They seemed to work well everywhere. Granted, I haven't done 'mudding' but these are not mud tires and I am not going to go out and get stuck somewhere, pretending they are. But they did find traction in sticky clay the other day. It will be a while till I get some time in deep sand with them but so far I like how they are working. They felt good, easy to maneuver, not heavy and plodding like the BFGs felt on my last Tundra. Very nimble. And then just air up the tires at the end of the trail and they deliver a smoother and quieter ride on pavement than the BFGs. If the Coopers hold up well over time, I don't think I will go back to the BFGs.

 

Thanks for the informative write up! I am going to be needing tires in the next 5k or so. I have KO2's now, but these have my interest for my next set. I do like the looks of the KO2 ass they seem a bit chunkier. The only downside to the XLT is that they are 2 ply sidewalls. I do off road the truck a fair amount. The Coopers do look like they would be better on road as well as in the wet. Are you still happy with them?

 

Look at the weight of the AT3 versus the KO2 as well as the 60,000 mile warranty on the AT3 compared to others also.

 

285/75R18. Super smooth and quiet on the road. Works well in all weather conditions. I can not speak about performance in snow as I am in the south east. I have read in other threads they are rated with the snowflake or that they do make a snow rated model.

 

Are these the XLT AT3?

 

I vote for the Cooper tires; I've had nothing but bad experiences with the BFGs I've owned. The first set were the Mud Terrain KMs with pathetic sidewalls and the second were the KO2s which had a bunch of chunks of polyester missing from the sidewall and were down to 5/32nds of tread (on the worst tire, the others had a little more left) after only 10,000 miles.

I had 2 sets of those on a Ford Explorer. Not on the Tundra. It was basically my introduction to Cooper tires, and they are the ones that sold me to the brand. I have also since had Cooper Evolution on my Tacoma and Coopers on my Camry. They are all good in my opinion.

 

BFGs are better offroad tires IMO. Had KO2s on my LR3, they were awesome and also very quiet on the road. They also saved my ass when I went hydrosliding at 75mph sideways into a bridge wall. They acted like huge bumpers and I bounced off the wall without any damage to the body.

I'm curious why people are having issues with the K02 tire wear. Mine have 80k on them and there's still about 10k of life left. Regular rotations each oil change AND I put about 20 hours off road on them a month. Not sure why you are all having tire wear issues. Sounds like your alignment or suspension components are junk. I'm not a unique case, I've talked to a lot of people who do run them and get GREAT mileage.
