Timing Belt Specifications 2004 4.7 V8

    I have read some conflicting info about the process of setting the belt/crank for an 04 4.7 V8. Does anyone have any info on the specs or a factory manual that provides them? Any help from someone who has done it would be a great help!

    Set the crank to its marks. Set cams to their marks. Match marks on belt. Viola...

    I wish it were that simple. I have had a few experienced people say to turn it past TDC 50 degrees and others say (including the instructions on the Dayco kit not to.

    I’ve done a few. I’ve always followed the instructions on my Haynes Manual. Then I turn it over by hand a few times. Then I put it together and run it about 90k mikes before doing it again:)

    Here's an excerpt that was on another thread. Its one of the two things I found that have mentioned it. I just want to make sure I do it correctly for my year engine.

    "The following thread will explain how we set up the Toyota 2UZ-FE Timing Belt marks when replacing the timing belt.

    The first tip is that we set the timing marks in place with the engine past/after TDC and not on TDC. This is because this engine is an interference engine and it will help prevent the valve damage if the cam or crank were to slip and rotate."​

    I usually set it to tdc. Then rotate it to where the mark on the crank pulley is lined up with the idler pulley bolt on the timing belt. If the cams slip, you don’t damage the valves then. Line the marks on the new belt up with the marks on the pulleys rotate engine 2 times till the recent mark and check timing

    Here are the Aisin Instructions. One has the 2UZ-FE engine and the other has the 2UZ-FE engine and the Tundra 2000-04 model listed. I don't know if I have the interference engine feature on the 04 that would suggest the ATDC setting.

    All of the 2uz engines are interference 05-06 just have added bulk on the cam sprockets for the vvti .

    empty_lord, I wonder why the cover of the instructions is so confusing. Does the factory instructions shed any light? Sounds like ATDC is the way to go. Have you personally done any like that?

    I’ve done them at tdc, you just have to watch the cams do not slip. More of an issue with the vvti cam gears though. I’ll get the instructions today. Tis was down by the time I got home
