My Tundra may get totaled. Can you help with Value?

At 2 am this past Sunday (father’s day) morning my pristine 2000 Tundra (with 96,000 miles and in perfect condition) was hit while parked in front of my house by a drunk driver who fled the scene on foot. He was caught a couple blocks away barefoot. He glanced off a new Infiniti QX and plowed directly into my truck. Pisses me off I’ve owned it since new in Jan2000. Within the last two months I’ve put in new Bilstein 5100’s, new upgraded Toyota brakes, new top of the line battery, new WeatherTech floor liners, and did a complete clay-bar, paint polish. The paint looks deep, wet and better than showroom (except for some rock chips). The Michelin LTX tires had 2,500 miles on them. And the timing belt was done at 85,000 miles. I love this truck! Insurance company will probably total it and low ball me. if the frame isn’t messed up, I want to keep it.

Anyone know good sources to determine the insurance/retail value of this low-mileage, one owner Tundra in nearly perfect condition?

2000 Tundra Access Cab Limited TRD, leather, 4x4, spray in bed liner, with GemTop canopy, all maintenance through Toyota on-schedule/ early. 96,000 miles. No prior accidents. Looked and ran flawlessly. Upgraded pioneer stereo with Apple CarPlay and Backup Camera. Oh, yeah and the gas tank was filled before I parked it for the night just hours before it the accident. Lots of family memories in this truck!

I drove it home from the tow lot (it ended up in the middle of the street after the accident). It ran fine and drove fine. All the doors worked fine. Even the tailgate works easy with only minor binding.

 

So sorry to see this. It's my biggest fear after sinking so much money into my truck. I'm assuming the shitbag that hit you doesn't have insurance?

 

I’m guessing no insurance, charged with DUI +Hit and Run. And, probably not his first time at the rodeo! He turns 30 tomorrow. But, the police report gave his address he lives 8 blocks away in a house that the (googled) county records show as in a trust in his name (tax valuation $450,000). He must have family money. Trusts are usually set up to protect people/children from themselves. I was fully covered. My insurance can go after his ass! He was driving a ‘94 Nissan pickup, which wound up slammed into my rock wall too. A real mess.

One thing I’ve realized while considering a replacement: the Gen1 Tundra is the perfect size Truck for me. Tacoma’s are too small inside and Gen2 are too big for around town. And Gen1 are quieter on the road and just damn nice to drive.

Truer words were never spoken. It's one thing to have a 20 yo vehicle with 300K miles on it have something like this happen to it...but to one in your condition with those miles, man that makes my heart hurt.

There is a reason insurance companies own the most expensive real estate in the world and a reason they never go out of business. Ain’t cuz they’re breaking even.

NADA values are a good place to start. Get comparisons at dealers, have print outs or links. Be ready to battle for every dollar. Do not let up on the condition it was in, low mileage, only owner etc. Also make sure you tell them of all the upgrades.

If you are not happy with their offer, refuse. Tell them you cannot replace it for the said offer. Their first offer is usually never their best (99% of time), they may try to "low ball" you with an initial low figure.

Carfax doesn't have much for 1st Gen, but I found one.

Buy a good framed high miled 2000 and drop in your old engine and shocks tires

 

Doubt they will total you. Salvage yard bed, tailgate, and bumper for $1,000. Add paint $500, labor $1,000...$2,500-$3,500, less your $500-$1000 deductible and you're back on the road! Otherwise, buy it back, use the insurance check for above mentioned repairs. Spend the remainder on a new toy.

 

This is Manheim dealer auction. This is what dealers use for trade in value and retail value. KBB, NADA and the others do not buy or sell cars so there info is considered an educated guess where as Manheim is where dealers, insurance companies and manufacturers buy and sell inventory.

 

If your insurance is paying, they won't compensate you for the new parts, they'll say they're maintenance items.

You may have more pull if the drunk's insurance is paying. Document everything recent with receipts. When my 2004 was hit on the freeway, my insurance ended up paying me more then I paid 2 years & 40,000 miles earlier.

You should get private party value or better. Probably $8,000+

 

If they decide to repair it, make sure you ask for $$ with consideration to depreciation value. The truck is worth less once it is repaired and the accident is in the history, you are entitled to this value difference.

Check this site out. My daughter’s boyfriend was in the same predicament a few months back. His insurance company tried to total his truck at a lowball price. I believe this site helped up his recovery value.

 

I'm getting old, couldn't find the correct verbage. Diminished value is correct. The insurance adjuster is not obligated to inform you of this but if you ask for it they include it.

 

The guy I know that frequents Pullman would leave me to believe you're correct.


Sorry to hear about the truck. Bad juju man. I got hit by a semi and it was a joke just trying to get my truck fixed. I ended up paying my high deductible and dealing with it. My deductible is high because if I screw my truck up then I expect to deal with it or fix it myself. Drunk drivers suck big time, but at least you weren't hurt.
