Ok first and foremost please don't flame me, I'm just asking a question.

That being said, so I changed my oil in my 2016 OR. What a pain in the ass... The fact that the "skid plate" has 7 different bolts, 4 of them resessed is completely unnecessary since it's only like an 1/8 of an inch sheet metal. Sorry rant off...

So I went ahead and dropped the skid plate, and drained the oil. I then went next to the oil filter and after seeing that only needed a 3/8 extension I was pretty happy... When I found that it needs some crazy oil filter wrench I was not so happy. I went ahead and put it all back together, filled the oil and had to call it a day because I was out of options and my father-in-law always told me "you don't need to change the filter every time."

So all of that being said, is there truth to "you don't have to change the filter every time"? If not is it possible that when I buy the stupid Toyota oil filter socket, that I can change the filter without draining ALL of the oil (ie 50bux in synthetic oil)?

I should say I was only 3k miles when I changed it and I put in 8.5qts of full-syn... If that makes any difference.

    Thoughts?

The oil filter should absolutely be changed every time. Does your FIL not like you much? Just wondering...

Reason #420 I buy new vehicles most of the time.

You can't change the filter without all the oil draining out.

You don’t have to change the filter every time, but... your engine will probably last longer if you do. IMO, oil and a filter is cheap and easy preventive maintenance. I do mine every 5k. I don’t care what the dealership recommends.

In your case, I wouldn’t sweat it. Changing it with only 3k miles, with clean oil, is an improvement, because you stepped back the 3k miles by adding all that good oil in the mix, so it probably won’t make a difference. You bought some time and your engine’s situation is improved

the skid plate design sucks. Lots of members fabricate a small door in the plate to avoid removing it every time. Amazon sells a good filter tool for cheap.

I bought the motivx socket from Amazon. I also bought an RCI skid, partly because the stock skid is really not much of one, but mainly because of the nice access plate which prevents you from having to remove the entire skid.

I agree with the consensus; changing the oil filter is important.

In your scenario, I would either remove the filter quickly to minimize oil loss, and replace the filter along with the oil lost.

Or, thoroughly clean your drain pan, drain the engine oil, replace the filter, and add the drained oil back to the engine.

The latter is probably less messy.

Oil filter wrench for Toyota is like $5 at walmart. I would change the filter whenever oil is changed.

My 5.7 takes 8 quarts with a filter change, maybe yours is different, but you gotta have close to 9 quarts in there now... Mobil 1 has a $12 rebate per 5 qt. bottle, Walmart sells Mobil 1 right now for $22. You should be changing your oil for like $40 with filter...

aaaaand instead of an actual metal skid plate to keep liquids and debris away from your engine that should last 300k+, they could have used plastic like most cars under-carriages if you’d prefer that...
