I recently bought a 2002, and my only extra passengers are typically my two dogs. The bench style second seat is a too-shallow shelf made even more uncomfortable by the right angle of the upper/back-rest part. Is it possible to remove the back, only, but leave the seat? I’m thinking this would create extra space back there, and make the seat deeper, hopefully deep enough for my dogs to sleep on without falling off everytine I slow down abruptly. I do a lot of traveling/camping with them behind the front seats in the cab, and am more concerned about functionality for me, than I am for resale...thanks!

I don't think the bottom part of the seat goes all the way back. If you remove the back you might have a gap. Aside from that I think the bottom is anchored independently so you should be able to get the back off

Easiest thing is remove the entire seat (4 bolts) and put a custom (made by you) removable cushion block the same height as the rear seat bridging to the front leg well.
