I'm changing my speakers, got to the center dash speaker, turns out it is a dual voice coil. Crutchfield said a Infinity Reference REF-3022cfx would fit. It's a single voice coil.

The dual voice is fed the other dash speakers, one to each coil. So left dash feeds one coil and right dash feeds other coil. There's always a coil fed, even if you adjust panning hard left/right.

I called their tech support, the guy kind of meandered through a few things, landing on what he "did in the old days". Suggested to take positive from one side and negative from the other. He made the point that it keeps the load balanced through the head unit. Sounds reasonable enough, but is it really accurate?

Anyone have thoughts? I looked, no obvious way to fit both speakers in there.

you cant take the pos from one side and negative from another that won't work. Just eliminate the center speaker.

Everyone is quick to say get rid of the thing. Since the dash speakers are not easily replaceable, I was hoping to upgrade the center to something decent to help the dash-based sound.
Is it stupid to just tie it to one side? The crutchfield tech mentioned it would create a load imbalance and maybe make the volume lower.

Yes it will create an imbalance If you tie it to one side.

Theres a reason everyone is advising to eliminate it.

The combined impedance of a factory corner dash speaker and one of the voice coils of the center speaker is 4.4 ohms. They are in parallel. I am replacing my corner dash speakers with 4 ohm 2-way 3.5"
speakers (Pioneer TS-A878) and eliminating the center speaker which in my opinion muddies up the stereo effect of the head unit. The new corner dash speakers will be driven solely by the head unit and have a bass blocking capacitor in series with the positive speaker lead. The blocking capacitor (37uf non-polarized 50v) eliminates frequencies from 1khz -1.2khz down at 6db per octave.

I replaced the dash speakers in my 2013 4runner using the same Pioneers and blocking capacitor. The front stage improved greatly with much cleaner highs.

Bump. Anyone actually replace that center speaker? I know people say eliminate but if I can put a quality speaker in there then why not?
    Who’s done it?

Im down to see what mine sounds like without the center speaker. I just updated head unit to Kenwood DNX996XR. Do i simply unplug the center speaker or will that cause problems with the corner dash speakers?

I picked up dash speakers in group buy from tech 12 volts and the center was replaced with this....

Center channel is a custom made tech12volts bolt in bracket that houses a pair of included JL Audio C1 tweeters. This bracket bolts right up in the factory holes.
