That is a clean one. If I was able to do it over again I would avoid 00-02 and get an 05-06.

That's a fair price for a 1 really clean one owner though.

The 05-06 is best tundra so far IMO, unless you are towing or hauling heavy crap. But understanding the flaws of the 00-02 and addressing them will bring that truck up to a really good place. I would still prefer the 00-02 over many trucks by other manufacturers simply because of why, what and how I use the truck and add the overall Toyota reliability.

I agree. More HP, better brakes, 5 speed auto. Plus the double cabs are just a lot better looking and have more usable space. I wish I had done more research. I'm not sure that the 02 issues are that practical to fix though. I can't do much about the planetary gear problem and the exhaust leak is expensive and/or difficult to fix. I'm scared to ask what the other known issues are...? Those were the 3 main ones I knew about.

I had a 00 & 01. Swap the transmission to the OEM used low mileage 03-04 unit and if you want to get fancy then install a shift kit. Upgrade the front brakes, the powerstop kit is a cost effective and easy way to go. And then the damn exhaust leak at the manifold, this is gonna hurt but I say go with long tube headers (might as well since your in there). Clean your maf sensor often or swap it out and do not use a oiled air filter like k&n. I got good results with the jet maf.

My 2002 continues to be an outstanding reliable truck, I see no reason to avoid the earlier models.

They are good trucks, the engine is definitely solid. The 05 I'm presently driving does have more power but in most cases my 01 with 35" tires and 4.56 gears held it's own and after much tweaking I was averaging 16-17 mpg. I'm completely stock in the 05 and I'm getting 15-16 mpg, I haven't figured out why just yet.

That's about right for mixed driving...my stock 06 DC 4x4 gets around 13-14 around town and 17-18 on the hwy. My 2002 AC 4x4 stock got about 14-15 intown and 17-18 on the hwy if i remember correctly.

My 01 ac 4x4 lifted with 35" tires and 4 speed tranny vs 2wd DC completely stock with 5 speed tranny. I would have guessed an improvement in mpg

I keep waiting for the world the end for my 02’ based on all the 15 years of internet reading I’ve done on:

    1) Pink Milkshakes.

    2) Planets exploding in my rear.

    3) WEak brakes.

    4) Transmission Failures.

    5) Double Cardans throwing shafts.

    6) Lower Me Balls Lickem Joints.

This truck keeps on truckin’ baby.

I dunno, there's just something to be said for being able to actually check your trans fluid I like. I still wouldn't mind a DC though; my 12yo is starting to get a little cramped in the back.

Is this issue with the 2002 Tundras, and if so what's the name of this $250 bypass plug n play gizmo and who sells it?
