My Grandpa recently bought a new Tacoma and a 5000lb travel trailer. During his first trip he realized the Tacoma was not enough to pull the trailer. He has come to his senses and is buying a new Tundra tomorrow. My question is how soon can he tow the trailer with the new truck. He will be driving from Washington back to California but can stick around for a little while to get some miles on the truck first.

I think Toyota says 500 or maybe 1000 miles before towing.

If he does make sure they update the ECU or it wont recognize the trailer brakes! INSIST ON IT! It only takes an hour or so and is a software issue. I doubt all the Tundras on the lot got the update...

Tacoma does a great job but the Tundra is the answer!

I'd lobby for the rear sway bar to be included too if it doesn't have it. I think Sport does Off Road does not.

If he's gonna take long trips or full time I highly recommend a BakFlip 4 tonneau cover as opposed to a shell. So much easier to access gear! Ask for dealer discount. Toyota doesn't stock or sell them but my dealer gave the name of a local BakFlip dealer who sold it to me for dealer price. ~$200 cheaper... ~$600 I installed. Mines been through some weather and not one drop inside...no leaks!

Thanks! I was not aware of the trailer brake issues. Must be an 18+ thing. The factory brake controller works great in my truck. I have been trying to talk him into the tonneau but I think he likes having the canopy. We’ll see the canopy on the Tacoma was like $2800

The trailer issue doesn't affect everyone. I've never had a problem with my 2018 recognizing my trailer.

    Right!

But you don't know till you hook up then it's back to the dealer!

If they are prepping the Tundra you may ask about it.

Problem is many dealers are/were not aware of the fix a few weeks ago and doing all sorts of checks to find out.

Pass along the attachment from the other thread to show the dealer if it's an issue.

Either way not a big deal!
