What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Pressure plate did bad things on the one in back.



The one on the right has sat for 10 years, but has lots of goodies on it.

 

Today I installed the Skid Row skid plate I had ordered. This thing is much beefier than the OEM one. I think it looks pretty cool too. I rotated my tires today as well.

And just ordered the Z36 kit with the 13WL caliper upgrade. My only concern is trimming the dust cover behind the rotor and hoping that my wheels arent going to interfere in anyway.

Test drove my Tundra today. Been sitting ?? 2 weeks maybe?

Put 3qts of the Lucas in the rear end. Book says 3.1, but store only had 3 jugs. I filled it with nose down & fluid level check found it slightly below the fill plug. I'm good with that for now. I'll pick up another 4 in 2 weeks & do the Tacoma & they can split #4 to spill over.

Drove the truck on the hwy to the other side of the city, parked at the far end of the Lowes lot. Did some shopping, came back out, remote started it & by the time I got there the rear was still bone dry. I'll drive & watch it for a week to see if any fluid seeps out through the paint or from one of the fill/drain holes.

Finally installed the Dirty Deeds 12 hole injectors today. Haven’t driven her yet but no leaks after start up, so I’m happy so far. Tackling some wiring tomorrow and then a test drive.

 

I wonder why the color keeps changing? I like the blue!

 

But Salmon was so hot last year!

Today I got my truck back from the mechanic. $250 worth of parts (water pump, timing belt, tensioners, serpentine belt), plus a slightly used OEM exhaust manifold on drivers side (both for $100, plus some gaskets) and a new oxygen sensor ($45 on Amazon), and $800 worth of labor, the truck is running so much better. No more leaks, and the sound I've been hearing for years from the general area beneath the gas pedal ended up being a crack in the exhaust manifold. Replacement manifold took care of the noise, I am so happy.

We're going to check Guanella Pass tomorrow and see if our favorite hike is passable or still covered in snow. It should be a good day.

Now, if only I can figure out the noise in the back... even the mechanic couldn't find it. I am still looking for some time to mount the GoPro under the back to see if I can record the source of the noise.

Next on the list:

-Front rotors and pads (arriving Wednesday)
-Interior cleanup with a new brush + carpet cleaner
-New stereo solution (I really want double din with a full screen and a backup camera, but I'm cheap so it'll probably be a singe din $100 stereo)
-Front suspension refresh (I'll check all the bushings and ball joints when I fix the brakes)
-Attempt to convince my wife to buy a steam cleaner "for the hardwood", but get the one with a wand that can clean the engine bay as well. I'd like it clean so I can see any future leaks better

 

Bought this 2006 two months ago with 98,000 miles. Have been working hard on replacing the regular scheduled maintenance.

-Replaced broken radio with new Pioneer Car play unit
-New speakers all the way around.
-Rear camera instalL
-Timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, tension pully, and spark plugs all changed out.
-front and rear diff fluids changed out, transmission fluids drain and fill, and transfer case fluid replace.
-led lights in the cabin and rear lights.
-debadge.
-stubby antennae

So far she drives like a dream and love this truck way more then my 2017 Tacoma that I traded it in for. Next up.

-Front window tint
-lift with new shocks
-tires and wheels.

Hopefully this beast lasts!!

 

You got all that done for $800 in labor?

 

Timing belt kit with water pump replacement, exhaust manifold drivers side replacement with the new oxygen sensor was $700 in labor. I told him to look at the the noise I have in the back and he spent some time on that (looked into the driveshaft and hubs and even tightened the bed thinking it might be the culprit), and he replaced a broken wheel bolt in the back, and I felt like he deserved another $100 on top of it.

Not a standard mechanic shop though - just a guy that used to be a mechanic and he does some side gigs now. Honestly, I didn’t even shop around, but I’m fairly confident it was a good deal. I know I’ve spent 7 hours on passenger side manifold alone, and I felt it was worth the cost to have a pro fix my water pump issue.

 

Would anyone be comfortable with aftermarket sway bar links? The OEM links are $100 each..

 

The off-road shop put aftermarkets on mine. Not sure of the brand, but they are more stout and I believe were half the price. A no brainer.

 

I haven't ever put OEM replacement swayer links on. they're all a pain, no need to spend a million dollars on the same part as a cheap alternative.

 

X2 there isn't a whole to them to screw up.

The stereo / back up camera is something you will interact with every single day multiple times. It will really make a difference in how you enjoy & thus care for the truck. Don't cheap out on this. Even if you end up spending $500 on it, that is cheap for a "new" modern truck. I promise you'll NOT regret spending the money - every single day.

 

I have an older Kenwood double din that I’d sell for cheap. Have to find the exact model (at my office) but it would be $100 or less.

 

I regret getting a single din unit. Double din with camera would have made it a lot easier to back up at night.

 

I can't believe I waited so long to connect my backup camera. This is a dark side street with just my LED backup lights.

 

She definitely gained back some pep. Throttle response is quicker and holds the gear under acceleration instead of a quick downshift, like before. I’ll report back in a few weeks with a better update. So far, money well spent.

 

Shortly man. They told me soon and I'll be the first to know. I'm anxious to get them on!

 

Add another item to the list I didn’t knew exists, but now need.

 

I installed Moog branded ones on my truck. Inexpensive and decent reputation. So easy to install, if they break again I can install them 3 times for the cost of oem.

 

Do you happen to have a plug and play harness for it? I looked at crutchfield - mechanical aspect of installation is easy, and crutchfield offers a custom wiring kit for $25.

 

IMO it's not worth the $25 for them to do it. I like Crutchfield but for older non premium stereo vehicles it's not worth it. The install stuff for our trucks is about $20 on Amazon.
