Getting ready to tow a travel trailer...

So we're about to go camping soon and we're renting a TT. Its 28ft 4600 lbs dry weight, they said we need a 2-5/16" ball, so I bought one. It's a Curt brand and it recommends the nut be torqued to 450 ft lbs. Um how the heck can I get that done?! Lol I looked up a torque wrench capable of that, it runs $350+!!

Any ideas on how I could get that done?! Can I rent a torque wrench that big?

 

Or you can go to an RV dealer and they’ll torque it for you.

To you have a WDH?

 

RV dealer like said above or a machine shop. Might charge like $20.

 

Breaker bar + 3’ long piece of pipe + someone who weighs 150# putting all of their weight on the end of said pipe.

 

No WDH unless the owner of the TT is providing one for us. if I was buying a TT, I would look into it though, I saw the thread on WDH vs airbags. Definitely on the list!

 

Ok cool, thanks guys!! I have a Lowe's, autozone, and camper world near me, I'll check to see if they will rent something like that or can do for low rate. Didn't think about the breaker bar and pipe! Lol I remember doing that back in the day!

 

I would get some clarification. I cannot imagine they would rent Travel Trailer's without supplying a WDH to use with the unit. You will also need a brake controller installed on your truck if you don't have one already.

 

My truck has the tow package so i have the brake controller. Yeah i'll double check, yes it would be helpful if it is included! thanks!

 

So I called around, 1 of the 4 AutoZones near me said they had a torque wrench that could handle up to 450 ft lbs but they had loaned it out. Apparently it would have cost $200 but it is refunded once you return the tool. Not bad. Called 2 RV places, 1 their service dept was closed on weekends, the other one said yeah we can do it but we'd have to charge you a minimum of 30 minutes of labor, ~$80. So that was my only option as I needed to get it done this weekend. Went in there and was standing in line behind another guy who needed the same thing as I did but he was sorta being a douche and hadn't even paid for his ball hitch yet. Service guy said go pay for it first please and come back to him to get it fixed up. I stepped up and said I needed same thing but these were mine I brought in. I was cool with him and joked about the guy who was in front of me and he laughed. I told him I know he has to charge me for 30 minutes minimum, he said ok cool, you were listening. He walked off and was back within 2 minutes and said we're good, no charge! Sweet! Thanked him and left be he changed his mind. Lol
