Anyone powder coat their wheels?

Thinking about having my wheels powder coated on my 18 TRD Tundra. I was quoted $68 per wheel. That includes sand blasting. I have a couple of questions. Would you choose gloss, satin, or flat? And how well does the powder coat hold up to being exposed to tire cleaning agents?

 

$68 a wheel is a good deal. I paid $100 a wheel when I had mine done last year. So far they are holding up really good.

Gloss satin or flat is your choice, as is color. Gloss would clean the easiest. I had my wheels for my spare tire powder coated radioactive gloss green. I don't use anything to clean them but a wet towel. I never use tire products so not sure how that will react.

 

I would think that $68 is a pretty good deal. I would call or ask around to other shops and do some price comparisons. Only be a little skeptical of that price if everyone else is quite a bit higher, potential quality reasons. However, if you know the shop is good...go for it. I have watched a few videos on how to properly paint wheels and it can be decently time consuming. I'm thinking I'll probably do my own here soon.
As far as color or finish, it depends on the rest of your scheme. My truck is white but my flares, bug deflector, and window visors are all matte/satin black. So, in my case I would go with matte/satin.

I was quoted $95 a wheel of I wanted black. Reason was they said they always keep black on hand and it’s so common it’s readily available. I ended up paying around $150 a wheel because I went with a color that required a two step process. Not sure what that means but they came out amazing

 

Price depends a lot on color too. My buddy uses a powder coat shop frequently for his business. When he got my wheels done if I wanted gloss black or gloss red I could have gotten $60 per wheel. I wanted a crazy color though so I paid $80 each.

 

I just picked up my TRD wheels yesterday. Paid $300 for the set in satin black. They were blasted & coated and look amazing. After I scheduled my appt, I found out Les Schwab will powdercoat wheels and offers loaner wheels. Not sure of the LS quality, but they were like $57 a wheel.

 

Me too, thats a steal. I was quoted between 500-600 for all four.

 

Most wheels with color are powder coated. A very durable finish. Few drawback if doing existing wheels;
-Having truck on stands for a few days.
-Having tires removed and remounted.

Ideal with cheap new set when getting new tires.

 

I did gloss due to the ease of cleaning as already mentioned. Also, I wanted the sheen to match the stock centercaps.

I went with Satin this round. I've had flat and gloss in the past. Flat looked great when new but seemed to show scuffs easily and was hard to keep clean. I'm not a fan of how the gloss looks, but it is much easier to clean.

 

I looked into it. Gloss looks a little better to me. Might clean up easier as well. Matte always looks dirty to me and I've heard it is harder to clean. That said, gloss will scratch easier. First the wheels need to be blasted or (better) chemically stripped. I shopped around the Phoenix area. Best price including stripping was about $400 and about 5 day turn around time. Logistically it's a hassle though-- I didnt have another set of wheels to temp swap onto the truck and I need to be able to drive it. In the end I went with aftermarket wheels which cost me under $800 out the door. And I sold the factory wheels separate for $360 and tires for $300.... they had about 8k miles on them....overall less money out of my pocket to go aftermarket.

 

I appreciate all of the great comments. The powder coating shop is giving me the "firefighters discount". Also, as some have mentioned, I have to deal with having the tires dismounted, delivering the wheels, and pay for my truck to sit on a rack at my local tire shop for two days or more. It would be worth paying more for a shop that did it all.

I’m having my Methods powder coated in Hyper Black this week. It’s very expensive, but they are doing the center caps and all the mounting and balancing.

 

Bak in 2012 I had some Black rocks for my JKU powder coated bronze (no one made bronze rims then), Fast forward to today, My brother in law now has the jeep down in PHX and they still look great!

 

By the time you are done you could have just bought new wheels. To me its not worth it. Unless you can get a hold of wheels and tires to borrow in the mean time not worth the time or money. Just my opinion

You could wait till you need new tires and that way you were paying for the mount and dismount anyway

 

I want to get my stock OR wheels powder coated bronze. Only dilemma is getting my center cap paint matched
