Mbrp Cat Back Exhaust

Hi there, I'm looking to upgrade the exhauts in my truck.
I'm thinking in the MBRP Cat Back Exhaust does any one have this system install ? What's the pros and cons.. Thanks

I have it. Would recommend. Great price, I paid $320 to my door. And installed in only 15 minutes, that includes putting my tools away even.
Not a quiet exhaust, but I wasnt looking for that- and not obnoxious either. Nice deep growl, slight crackle once in a while after revving out and letting off the gas. Did seem to drone a bit around 2k rpm when new until it broke in for a month or so. @jberry813 bought the same one for his '15 as well after hearing my truck. He can add his opinion here I'm sure as well. I know on his Tundra with it being supercharged it made the exhaust a bit louder

 

I have the 3" installer series. There was a sale and got it for just over $200. Excellent deal for a cat back even though it didn't include a tip. Check my build thread if you want to see some pics. If you get the same as mine, it droned I cut off the tip after it dumped after axle and the drone was gone! Very nice sounding exhaust and always gets complements.

I do want to try the Bamuffler. Once I have some $$$ I will try it. Heard so much good things about them.

I too have been looking at the MBRP cat back system, what's everyone's opinion on style? I am going back and forward between the single side exit and the dual side exit, any pros or cons?

 

What does leaving the cat on do for you? I would think Removing the cat would make it run better. Aren't there 2 cats on later models?

 

Typically removing any emissions control is illegal and will result in the vehicle failing smog testing. Just FYI

 

Yes it is a state law. Illegal immigration, and marijuana are also against federal law but no one enforces them. So is public burning of businesses and police cars. No one enforced that law in furgerson and Baltimore. My state doesn't have vehicle inspections anyway. Wish they would enforce real laws and leave law abiding citizens alone. I remember when this was a free country.

 

There are 4 cats total. The front cats have o2 sensors after them. If you remove the front two cats your ecu will get pissed and throw a check engine light. Along with said check engine light comes a sluggish feeling low and mid range. But overall hp increases by about 6. Not guessing. Saw it on my truck on a dyno several times.

That said, if you only remove the rear cats there is nothing gained for performance. Just more sound. And more smell.

And FYI, there is no benefit to removing front or rear cats. I've track tested stock to get a baseline. Then removed the cats at the track. The truck ran identical times with and without.

I thought u may have meant HP. Odd that it had more hp but was sluggish. Wonder if headers would help.

 

That wasnt a funny statement. It was a statement of fact, and showing concern for the direction this country is going.

 

More sluggish because the ecu pulls timing and adds fuel. It thinks something is wrong and defaults into safe mode. Not really limp mode. But drives like crap

 

Can it be reprogramed or get a gas engine programmer.

 

You can't force a tundra not to do this. At least nit yet anyway

 

any updates? Anyone get this? Looking at it online.

I’ll bite. I am looking at the MBRP system since it is a bolt on. Not a big fan of drone. If you think this is possible at the same price or less.

 

Yeah the MBRP system does look interesting. Price is great, installation is said to be simple, and it's loud.

Only thing holding me back is the possibility of drone. I hate drone. And I don't want to buy it and then maybe dislike it.

 

Well I ordered one yesterday, then found several more threads where guys say that it does drone pretty bad, so I immediately tried to cancel the order by calling, filling out a form on their website, and emailing them. NO response whatsoever, and 24 hours later they send an email that it's shipped. Sigh...

So looks like I'm getting a MBRP kit whether I like it or not. Shipping it back to them would likely cost a fortune.

 

Find a local muffler shop and have them weld on the factory resonator, after that add a turn down and BOOM, better exhaust without drone

 

Well I decided since I ended up with the kit to install it anyway. S5314P is the part number on the kit I got. $329 shipped. The least expensive full cat-back system I think I've seen in a LONG time.

Hardest part was removing the stock system. I didn't want to cut it, I wanted to have the option of reinstalling if I end up hating the MBRP kit. So I put the truck on the lift at my father's garage. Soaked all four flange bolts with PB Blaster really good. Waited a few minutes. Put a 14mm socket on my 1/2" ratchet and broke the bolts free. They appeared to be super rusty, but they all came free and were reusable. Thankfully! Then I sprayed the rubber hangers and began the process of prying those loose with a crow bar. Took a while and wasn't easy but I got them all free and removed the factory exhaust fully intact. Note: this would not be possible I don't believe if I tried to do it with the truck on the ground.

The MBRP kit then installed very easily. Honestly the entire thing was a piece of cake....until I got to the tailpipe on the very end. That required a lot of strength to push up on the tailpipe, slide it into the pipe forward of it, AND install the rubber hanger all at the same time. That part sucked but I got it done in about 5 minutes. Everything else was the easiest exhaust kit I've ever done on any vehicle.

I tightened all the clamps super tight after verifying that the last section of tailpipe wasn't touching the spare tire or the frame.

Truck sounds amazing. This is the best Tundra V8 sound I've heard, and I've listened to a LOT of exhausts on these trucks. With the windows down it's heaven. With the windows up it does drone like hell between 1,500 and 1,800 RPM under load. That's exactly where Magnaflow, Flowmaster, and all the other mufflers I've ever used on V8 pickups will drone. Just under 2,000 RPM, under some load, DROONNNEEEEEEEE....which is unfortunate because that's your cruising speed on the highway around here.

It won't be a problem until the end of the year when the windows go back up to stay, and at that time I'll get a resonator of some type to tone it down a bit. Overall for the money spent and the fitment, this kit is amazing.

 

I had been eyeing the stainless version of this and was curious if there's room to slip in a resonator somewhere to reduce the drone a bit. It doesn't look like there is based on the drawings and pics in the install manual. @WXman, are you going to make a video on the install or sound?

 

I thought about shooting a video of installation, but honestly there are already several videos on YouTube showing that. I suppose I could try to get some good audio of it tonight.

Been driving it for a couple of days now. Funny thing is, the drone is real bad at lower speeds in that 1,500-1,800 RPM range under load, but once on the highway at 55-60 it isn't bad despite running the same RPM. So far the exhaust has been more livable than I first expected.

A small resonator would fit in there somewhere, but I think it would have to be a small one. The best place to try and fit it would be in the tailpipe section. Perhaps that could be cut out and have the resonator put inline.

I'm tempted to remove that last section of tailpipe and see how it sounds. That would leave the exhaust dumped near the rear axle. I had read a couple of threads where guys claimed they cut 2 feet out of the tailpipe and the drone went away. Since this MBRP kit is all bolt on it would be easy to remove that last section of pipe and experiment with this. I might try it this summer.
