Most feel very minimum performance gains by replacing if any. New CAI may apply more with upgraded exhaust. The stock is CAI.

There is the TRD intake that some install.

Many like the drop in K&N.

The SABM seems to make sense, for more air anyway.

Don't buy a "CAI" for performance. Buy it because you like the look and want to hear more noise.

If you're looking for an "upgrade" over stock, about the best you can do is the SABM. It doesn't look any better than stock, but apparently you get that noise some look for. Jury is out on if it improves performance. Some say yes, some say no. I haven't seen any NA dyno results that prove it one way or another.

If you don't want to go that route but still want an "upgrade", grab an AFE dry drop in. Benefit of that is you can clean it and reuse it (that's a big deal for those of us who offroad/drive in dusty environments regularly). IMHO, stay away from the oiled versions. Very easy to under oil which results in terrible filtration, or over oil which results in that oil ending up all over your MAF.

K&N oiled drop in user since the mid 70's with no issues in a variety of conditions. Not rocket science. Of course after wheeling in severe dust/sand conditions you should always take a couple minutes to check filter when you get home. If you feel the need to get an aftermarket cai, then S&B is your best bet.

I went with the TRD CAI kit during the 4/4/19 40% off sale.
Been happy with it so far. No complaints. Didn't really notice any gains except the cool look under the hood, but I wasn't expecting much more than that.

    No doubt :)

There's something to be said though for getting home after a long day of wheelin, tired dirty and dusty yourself, and just pulling the thing, washing it off and setting it out to dry while you go clean up and crack a cold one. No extra step or diligence needed... well maybe a little more; you do need to remember to put the damn thing back in :D

Yeah, for $255 I couldn't really pass on it. I knew I'd buy an intake at some point down the road, but most likely for some extra coin had it not been for that sale.

Not to beat the dead horse (come on... crack a cold one with me and lets discuss...)

Has it been shown that the 18+ 5.7 is starved for air? They're still rated at 381/401 right? So assuming those numbers are accurate, could it be just a parts number thing? Easier for Toyota when it comes to support/supply chain?

Put it another way... has anyone made a dyno pull with no box connected? Open air? Did the numbers all the sudden jump up? Doesn't seem likely, but maybe.

(Full disclosure: I've done exactly that on a 2005 Hemi 5.7 and even after a computer reset the numbers were identical to those with a stock box attached. Apples and oranges but just sayin, in a world where specs dominate, one might expect the engineers to have squeezed everything they can out of the engine, within their emissions constraints. Limiting the air box size to the detriment of those numbers would seem unwise from a sales perspective.)

Oh and yes... the pucker factor was strong during those few minutes. I do not advise such a test, especially for those with a weak heart.

Fair enough. I'm just wondering if it matters. Thinking it thru, if it does matter, how can Toyota still advertise 381/401? They're either lying, or it doesn't matter...

Something I did learn from those tests that was interesting: its more about your intake tube than it is about your filter. If your tube is the right shape you can actually end up with a slight forced air effect. Don't ask me how or why; I'm not an aerospace/aeronautical/aerodynamics engineer. But what we found was if you build your intake tube in just the right conical shape, with a gentle radius at the right spot in front of the throttle body and at the right degree (both required because you cant just stick a straight cone on the thing and hope to close the hood), you can actually end up ramming air down its throat for a slight performance bump.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
The stock intake is a really good design. Just do an air filter swap. That's what I've done and no complaints!
