02 Tundra electrical problems

interior lights and radio not working... fuses are good, check wires going into back of radio and there is no power... where can I find wire diagram for interior lights and radio !!

 

Fuses under the hood ok too? Specifically the 7.5 (or 5 amp) one.

 

Yes.. all good

 

Make sure connectors are plugged into the harness behind the climate control knobs. I believe there are 2 connectors back there if memory serves me correctly.

I installed a new radio and went to test it before plugging that harness back in. No power to radio. Once I plugged that harness back in, *poof* magic! Must complete the circuit or something.

There is only one wire plug that goes into the back of radio.. it comes from a amp/booster looking thing behind the heater control and that has a couple plugs going into it... very hard to get access to

 

When you pop the whole face off for the center console controls (this covers the upper middle air vents, the clock, the 3 climate control knobs, etc) there should be a wiring harness that attaches to a click in type socket behind the climate controls. That is what I meant. I tried testing my radio before reinstalling everything to make sure I had power, but I had nothing. Once I plugged those wires back into the harness sockets I was good to go. Completed the ‘circuit’ and got power to my radio. If this doesn’t make sense I can grab pictures tomorrow.

After 10 hours tracing and testing electrical components I finally figured out why I was having so many electrical problems... water been getting into the fuse box and corroded shit out it.. anybody know where I can pickup a fuse box for a 02 Tundra

Damn. Now to find the leak too, windshield would be suspect numero uno.

 

Where was this component located?

 

It was corrosion inside the cabin fuse box.. water is getting into left side corner of the cabin some how, either windshield or somewhere else.. I have to some testing with garden hose

 

Elvis in the house. Was your fuse box wet?

Reason I’m asking is because my fuses had some very light corrosion on them. I assume normal, but I did not pull the box like you have and wonder if mine looks like yours just from natural humidity. I’ve never seen a leak on my drivers side.

I’ve had a theory on these 1st Gens that many of these ‘gremlin problems’ are corrosive/electrical situation based.

Yes... there is water getting into the drivers side corner of the cabin under dash. Haven’t figured out where the leak is yet but I’m suspecting the windshield

 

Random Factoids: Elvis had a Jelly Donut in his stomach post-mortem examination. Died on a toilet seat.

 

It's hard to tell from the pics, is anything actually damaged or is it just crusty?

If it's just crusty you could try soaking it in baking soda and water and scrubbing the crud off.

Otherwise I'd hit a scrap yard to find a good one. www.car-part.com has a bunch for under $100.

 

I was thinking the same per cleaning up the assy. Looked hard at Elvi (singular Elvis) pics last night and its hard to tell if some of the prongs are ‘fried’ and/or corroded off. The corrosion probably is on the backside of the metal abutting the plastic as well which may or may not cause future weirdness. Probably a low risk high reward is to obtain a new(er) panel.

I would love to clean that panel and slather some electrical grease on it, though.

 

It’s damaged... Some of pins where corroded so bad they broke off

 

Also some of wire plugs that go into the fuse box have corroded and broken off wires

 

This all started when my check engine lite came on and my gas pedal went dead... I was able to limp home with only 10% of gas pedal working. Next day I broke out the scan tool and pulled a P1127 error code (ETCS Actuator Power Source Circuit Malfunction) while diagnosing this problem I noticed the radio and courtesy lights where not working and that’s how I got to this point

 

That's a mess for sure. I'd look for a local yard and see if you can get the whole panel and plugs with about a foot of wire left attached. Depin and reuse the good wires you have and splice new ones for the crapped up ones.

 

Just pulled new/used cabin fuse box from a 01 tundra at my local salvage yard (Holland’s in North Billerica Ma) $70.. They had three first gen tundra’s to choose from

 

Repaired all broken or corroded wires then installed new cabin fuse box.. Courtesy lights and radio where working again but I had a new problem. The power windows and door locks where not working.. Then I remembered the tundra I took the cabin fuse box out of didn’t have power windows and door locks at the time I didn’t think it would make a difference. The cabin fuse box was a exact match to mine except for one thing the color of one plug on the front of the fuse box. Mine is brown and salvage yard replacement is green

 

Is the new one missing a pin in that connection?

 

You have some different size fuses as well.

 

No missing pins.. there all the same !!

 

Same wires on the plug as well??

 

Back at the salvage yard going to pick up a new cabin fuse box with the green plug.. hope this solves my problem
