So I recently purchased a used 16 DC SR5 with the larger fuel tank. I've been monitoring my mileage and fill ups. I usually fill up when the display says 37 miles to empty. However when I'm filing up, it barely takes 20 gallons. Is this normal? How big is the reserve fuel tank? Can it be reprogram Ed?

I've got the 26 gallon and normally its about 20 gallon fill up for me. I think its because the truck is designed to keep the fuel pump/sender submerged in fuel.

That whole pump submersion is a myth, our gas lights come on at 20 gallons for the 26er and 30 for the 38er, OP it sounds like you got the smaller tank unless somethings messed up...

Well I'm looking at my window price spec sheet and it says with SR5 upgrade adds larger 38 gallon tank

I know I've read on this forum that the fuel guage/display was not in-sync with larger fuel tank as some were saying is "generous" with the term EMPTY.

    If you go here:

    https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification

Register and enter your VIN. It will tell you how it came from factory.

Did that. Just pretty much says SR5 Upgrade Package. No mention of fuel tank

I would agree. DCs often have the smaller tank. Email the vin to Toyota and they will email you specs. I drove mine for 50 miles after the light came on last week and it took 30.5 gallons. The miles remaining must have been in the negatives because it would not even display. Most I have put in is 31.5.

I'd have to agree with the rest, sounds like you have the smaller tank. I am fairly certain the the bigger tank is an individual add, my SR5 does NOT have the bigger tank so it's not a "package" upgrade.

On a side note, what MPG app is that you're using and how do you like it?

I know on the 2017+ CMs the larger tank comes as part of the SR5 upgrade package. Not sure about DCs.

Medic343. I'm using the car fax app. Hard to tell if I like it until I get this issue resolved

Thanks all. I called Toyota and learned that the larger fuel tank only comes with the 5.7 and not the 4.6. No biggie at least now it's no longer driving me crazy

On the 2016+ SR5's you get the 38 gallon tank when you bump up to the "Upgrade" package. It's standard on the Limited and Platinum.
