I know there have been countless posts about how much the sound sucks on our tundras. Has anyone installed an amp only and connected it to the stock jbl sub? Wondering how this would work and sound. I hear the stock jbl amp puts a limitation on power to the sub so I want to eliminate that part. Would be nice if I can get slightly better thump without buying another subwoofer.

The amp powers all the speakers and contains the systems sound processor. Idk if you could add an amp between the JBL amp and sub, maybe use the wires going to the sub as high level inputs on an amp or get a speaker wire to RCA adapter and plug it into a mono channel amp. The sub is super light and cheap paper so I think more power would blow it, I mean it's very very light, Tiny magnet. You could try but it's unlikely itll improve the sub.

Yeah I was worried someone would say this. I’ll probably just go with an amp and sub add on. I was quoted $475 for a jl audio jx500 amp and this sub installed with a box. Does this sound reasonable?

I've thought about taking the connection on the sub and attaching it to a different sub to see if it makes a diff. I don't think it will since the same power output would be flowing to the new sub. Any thoughts??

For $200 you can buy a JBL sub in a custom box for crewmax from tech12volts. This sub plugs into the factory subwoofer wires and absolutely sounds better and gives probably 10x more bass. That is the cheapest solution and easiest way to actually get better bass. You could always amplify it better down the road but to start its the way I would go and the way I did go. You only need one spot for your tundra audio needs and @james@tech12volts is your man. Tech12volts.com
