    Hi Everyone,

New member here. I’m in the market for a Tundra and was wondering about the TRD Offroad option.
I currently own a 2003 Tacoma and the TRD OR included Bilstein shocks, better springs (I think), skid plates and a rear locker. I noticed the TRD OR on Tundras don’t include a rear locker yet some models have limited slip diffs.
I’m looking at a 2005 Limited with a lot of bells and whistles but it’s not a TRD OR. I’d like to have capability in snow and dirt/sand yet still be a daily driver. What was offered with the TRD Offroad on the Tundras?
Also, any red flags I should watch out for when looking at Tundras?

    Thanks.

I’m not certain what was offered on the first GEN TRD off-road. But the limited slip isn’t necessarily a part of it. It can either be a factory option or a dealer installed option. Some have a sticker on the back showing that it’s limited slip but that could be gone or fake. There was a thread here recently where someone said pull the fill plug and if you see gears it’s an open differential, if it’s solid looking inside it’s got a limited slip.

Thanks for the reply. That link is very informative. According to the Toyota Owners website the truck in question has the VSC +TRAC with automatic limited slip. I’m guessing that’s the electronic brake assisted version and not the true LSD.

I’m still wondering what came with the TRD OR package in the Tundras. Skid plates? Better shocks and springs?

I also have a 2003 in question. How are the 4AT trans vs the 5AT?

    Don’t forget the overpriced sticker.

That’s what I’m wondering. Surely there has to be something added to the truck beside a fancy sticker on the bed.

Quoted from a Motortrend article back in 2002:
“A handful of the most commonly ordered options, including a convenience package ($1060) with power windows/locks, mirror lighting, and sliding rear glass, the TRD off-road package ($925) with 16x7.0-in. alloy wheels and foglamps, a tow-hitch receiver ($379)”

If I'm not mistaken the TRD package has the stickers, bilstein HD yellow shocks, slightly heavier springs up front, alloy wheels, and on 05-06 sometimes a flimsy cosmetic aluminum skid plate thing.

Things to look out for include frame rust, and if possible find out if the timing belt job has been done. Other than that the 05 model is pretty faultless, they worked out the bugs and it has the 5 speed auto and VVTi motor with an extra 30 horses. Great model, honestly probably the best model, but expect to pay a premium.
