Coasting in Neutral question

Same here. Plus some of the stuff looked plain dangerous to me. But I did put my manual Isuzu in neutral a couple of times coming down some of the high bridges around here. 120-130 instantaneous mpg per torque pro.

I talked them into letting me back in.

 

Spinning an automatic transmissions output system without the pump running is verboten on some units.

 

I'm not sure that the gain in mpgs (if any) is worth the hassle.

 

Mercedes are VERY particular about this. It’s written in the owners manual a half dozen times. Lol


Personally, I N going down some grades or coasting to known stops. It’s helpful if you know your routes. I do notice an increase in mpg (35s w/6” lift and still avg 17.4 lifetime avg).

I think the key to saving a few mpg in these beasts is
1) proper tire pressure
2) driving like you had no brakes. Easy starts, long gradual stops.

Nothing like that link to the Hyper Miler guys. But definitely driving in moderation will get you a noticeable increase

 

This is technically illegal in CO. Unless on level or uphill.

 

I could see why. For anyone unexperienced or with a little knowledge on being a good driver LOL it would be a bad idea. Especially for tractor trailers. Want those guys missing a gear and flying down the grade. But other than that, I don’t know how any police officer could tell you were coasting in neutral downhill.

 

Its probably one of those laws enforced if there was a wreck.
