2012 tundra crew

So I have a 2012 TRD tundra and was wondering if I can go down to 17 inch rims from 18. A buddy who has tundra say you can't because the TRD has bigger brakes than the non TRD. Also do 3rd gen wheels for tundras fit 2nd gen?
