1st Gen Door speaker upgrade? Whatcha got?

Now that I went crazy with the sound proofing it's time to upgrade the speakers.
I'm going to use the stock stereo and all of that. I have a 10" Sub setup.

I'm looking at replacing the 6.5's in the front and rear doors.

So what did you guys use (speakers) and how do you like them?

 

I updated mine to JVC through Crutchfield. I'm of the belief that most of the manufacturers put out similar quality unless you're willing to spend a lot more.

Or more simply put, of the ones in the same price range you are not going to notice a huge difference from one brand to another. I've been happy with my JVC stereo and speakers but I definitely need a sub.

I did find out that the Metra 82-8148 do not fit on the double cabs.

I just redid my entire system and went with NVX speakers after some research. They seem to be pretty good quality for the price.

Are you going to power them with an amp? If not, I would just get whatever is cheap because it wont really matter anyway with stock head unit power.

 

Crutchfield is top notch. I won't buy head units anywhere else, only bought the speakers through Amazon because I had a gift card.

I put Infinity Reference in all 4 doors in 2008. Powered by the Alpine head unit, they're pretty nice.

 

Give these a try and let us know. They’re 2 ohm 7”, almost a perfect fit (need to create new screw hole). Crutchfield sells them for $50.

 

I did the kicker CS series speakers. I got the 6 3/4 in all 4 doors and they were a perfect fit with the factory housings. Best buy had the best price at the time. $39.99 for 2 speakers. (I have a 2000 Access Cab) I just used the supplied mounting screws. I paired this with a nice sony headunit that gave a little more power than the other headunits I was comparing. I did not however replace my tweeters, I need to do that! They don't have much bass, which is to be expected. You'll be fine with the 10" sub. I have a 12 rockford fosgate punch w/ kenwood amp. amp is set at half power and it's perfect for my needs.

 

I used Kicker CS series speakers in my 2017 Tacoma with the stock HU and it improved the sound IMMENSELY, so I second the Kicker recommendations.

Agreed. Normally I stay away from Best Buy, but the guys that I talked with were cool. They even let me open the box of speakers to verify the mounting holes lined up to my factory mounts (I took one completely out of the truck and brought it into best buy with me) So for $80ish you'll have 4 new speakers that in my opinion are great for what you are paying.

When installing 2 way 6.5's in the front door, do you just replace the original factory 6.5's? What about the tweeters on the upper door? Leave them alone? I purchased a pair of Rockford Fosgate as recommended by Crutchfield, but I had to use a gift card on Amazon, therefore, no installation instructions you normally get with Crutchfield.

I've got a blown stock JBL speaker in my '06 Tundra Limited DC so I am ready to replace my front and rear speakers. Having just spent $130 on a GTA Car Kits Bluetooth adapter, I will be keeping my stock nav/head unit. I've seen the adapter plates on Amazon that will allow for new speakers to be mounted up front, however they do not have a mounting location for another tweeter/mid to replace the stock one. I don't know if that'll cause problems with the stock amp (if I even have one).

Can someone please recommend a path forward that would be a straightforward replacement of the stock speakers?

 

You have a JBL amp for sure (99%)...so if you replace the speakers you will need to use 2 Ohm speakers...which are rare.

Most likely, your speakers aren't blown (very rare) what you have is deteriorating foam surrounds on one or both front speakers. They can be reparied with a $35 kit. I did this on my 2005 DC and it worked a charm. I will be doing it on my 2006 DC probably this weekend. This is the easiest way to fix your issue if you like the stock sound before the foam deteriorated.

So could I replace the amp in order to give myself more speaker options? I really think I'd rather just get new speakers than try to revive the old ones.

 

You can bypass the amp (and use new speakers of your choice), replace the amp (and use new speakers of your choice) or keep it and use new 2 Ohm speakers or repair the current speakers and leave everything else as is.

Crutchfield is your best place for advice for any option besides repairing the current speakers.

Just to add I repaired my speakers as Speedtre suggested and I'm good with how they sound. Pretty easy job and is the cheapest option.
