    Howdy,

Picking up my Tundra tomorrow! My cash outlay budget will be shot for a while but dealer is checking on a Toyota brand tonneau cover. I know it will cost more but if it adds minimally to my monthly payment would work better for me right now. BUT looks they are at least $1400 and I'm not finding reviews...

My dilemma is I am full timer RV hauling an Airstream and have things like a generator that need to be secure and out of weather immediately! No time to really shop as I'm camping. After living with a topper and inevitably having to crawl to the front of the bed to pull out one item I'm ready to try a tonneau that folds up to allow access.

Alternative is a Bk Flip 4 if I have to go cash out. I like others better but are closer to $1500.

So again really interested in review of the Toyota. If it's just expensive but secure and weather proof I'm good; if expensive and crummy.... I'll figure out something else...

    Thanks,

    Greg Marmalard

When I purchased my Tundra from dealer and after all pricing was complete I then started to ask for add ons. One of those being a hard tri fold cover. The dealership installed a Rugged Cover 2 which I absolutely love. Takes a minute to take off or on, it’s water tight, secures everything in the bed and I can open and close the tailgate without having to touch the cover.

When I bought my Tundra there was a new Tacoma in the showroom with the Toyota branded tonneau on it. It was pretty cheesy and looked like it would not do much to keep things dry. I don't know if the Tundra one is the same.

Are you sure that your generator will fit under a hard tonneau? My portable Generac is too tall by three or four inches.

I saw one on a semi custom Tacoma at a local dealer. Looked kinda cool; like a Bakflip 4..

I have a Honda EU2200i and it's below the rails in my Tacoma so imagine it will fit. In fact my entire load fits below which is why I'm considering tonneau.

I like the idea of the tri fold models that allow access to various "compartments" as needed.

I have it (2019, ordered direct from the factory when they built my truck). It appears to be a top quality cover (only have 2k miles on the truck so far). Good drainage, maybe 98%+ watertight (I will get some streams of water along the back wall of the bed, but that was during a car wash. I haven't seen any water make it in with the rain we've had this winter so far), fits like a glove, seems super solid, comes off/goes back on in 10 seconds with no tools (and two people), you can open and close the tailgate without having to open the cover... no comparison between it and the BakFlip I had on my Raptor (2010, for maybe 3 years before I took it off?); this one blows the BakFlip away.

    A few negatives:
-you cannot open all three panels to expose the whole bed; the tailgate side two fold on top of the cab side panel. So if you have something tall that needs to tuck against the cab or take the full bed, not gonna happen without removing the cover entirely (which again is super easy to do).
-the cab side panel doesn't open at all (except during removal of the cover). This is a bummer; the BakFlip did. I'm learning to work around it but I do miss that feature.
-you cannot open it without first dropping the tailgate. Not a biggie, but do be aware.

In retrospect, I might have given the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 a hard look had I not ordered this one direct from the factory, if for no other reason than that third panel opening independently feature.

And we'll have to see how the cover holds up to the elements over time. Will the black surfaces fade in the sun like the BakFlip did within the first year? If it does, at least its covered under the 3year bumper to bumper warranty.

But other than that, no regrets whatsoever. Great cover.

Edit: here's a couple pics I have showing what it looks like with the rear two panels folded on top of the front panel. Should give an idea of how much bed space height wise you loose since it doesn't open.

My Toyota trifold hasn’t held up super well.
It also doesn’t keep much water out from what I’ve seen.

    Hmmm

That doesn't look like the one I saw on the Tacoma....maybe though...

There are some very cool ones I'd love to get and will have to see what the dealer offers if any. Seems the Bakflip4 can be ordered and shipped almost same day whereas others have up to 2 week lead time. I'm never in the same spot for 2 weeks and no clue where next!

Nice toys! I had to sell mine when I hit the road. Way too many crazy laws from state to state. Kept a Sig for EDC...oh yea and a super cool German air rifle! Way better than dry fire laser drills for trigger discipline!

Check the parts department at your dealership. A lot of times they have displays of other tonneaus. If you see one that you like, they can probably add it into your financing.
