Not sure how the shifting mechanism works on these new transmissions in relation to internal or external. But on my Chevy, there was a cable linkage that went to a bracket on the side of the transmission. I had the cable come unhooked because of a cheap plastic part. I was able to manually turn the selector into the gear I wanted, while having someone in the car holding the brakes. Maybe the mechanism iced over and you need to clear it.

Would imagine it should be on the left side of the transmission.

I think he means that the selector is moving but nothing is happening in the transmission. So either the cable has come disconnected or is slacking up. Could be broken. Maybe he is low on transmission fluid and it’s not pressurizing enough to engage the gears.

I’ve installed transmissions on old cars and they would not shift into gear until I had enough fluid in them.

The slush that splashed up on my AT linkage ('70 Pontiac Lemans) flash froze while driving years ago... I was locked in drive until the ice melted away. I wonder if this truck has ice/snow packed around the linkage?

I found the problem, Went out start the truck to warm it up. Took off plastic cover around steering column and checked shifting mechanism to make sure nothing was broke. Nothing was. Then checked under truck, not knowing what I was doing but was looking for a cable going into transmission. found a cable and grabbed it. it was broken where it shifts the transmission into gear. It would but not move the gear. had some push on brake and was it was easily turned to shift gear into drive, and drove the truck off the lake. NOW MY NEXT QUESTION: anyone know where I can get shift cable for my 2006 Toyota Tundra???????

Anyone have any experience fixing the stud that this shifter cable attaches to on the trans? Just got an 02 replaced the cable but the selector in the trans is sticky. I can move it with a hammer, but I'm assuming this is what broke the cable initially. Is there another part that can be replaced without doing major tranny work?
