DON'T INSTALL LED TAIL LIGHTS ON YOUR SAFETY SENSE TUNDRA!!!

Well, I had to learn the hard way. I purchased a set of China made LED tail lights and they worked but did not increase in brightness once the brake was applied. I contacted their customer service rep which was a young woman with children crying in the background and was of no help to remedy it. I placed a return and they are being shipped back. I then ordered a set of Spyder black smoked rear tail lights thinking the first set was just a cheap brand. Last night I installed them and instantly had a "brake override malfunction" alert come up on the dash, the rear lights failed to work and the vehicle will not move from Park into any gear. It is now being towed to the dealership for what I believe will be a repair on the brake module.

Upon further research, the LEDs do not play well with the electrical draw of the new Tundra w/ Safety Sense. I have now spent over $500 in aftermarket LED tail lights that will not work and my new Tundra, with 307 miles is at the dealer. Warning to all of those with a new Tundra...DO NOT INSTALL LED TAIL LIGHTS!!!!

 

Dang that sucks! Most aftermarket taillight assemblies look really cheap and take away from the aesthetics of the truck anyway. If you need more light try some high quality LED replacement bulbs.

 

Hmmmm. Is there a way to give the factory housings a smoked look?

 

Most likely you blew the brake light fuse labelled “stop”.

 

I feel your pain. I've never had any luck with Spyder anything on any vehicle. I know some people here run them, but many others have had issues so it seems to be a crap-shoot at best. If Morimoto comes out with a pair that I like I might consider it, but until then just replacing the bulbs with LED's and resistors works for me.

 

Every aftermarket led rear housing is cheap Chinese made crap and look like it too. I installed LEDs into my oem housing the day after I bought it and have had no issue on my 18’.

 

I’ve had spyder smoked red tail lights on my truck since 2014 with no issues. As someone else said, I would check your fuse. Granted I don’t have a 18 plus truck but it sounds like a fuse blew especially if you truck has the same problem when you put the stock taillights back on.

 

and your truck has Safety Sense?

 

I am glad I went ahead and bought the 2017. My original plan was to wait until the end of 2017 or maybe 01/18 to buy. When I saw the price bump on the 18s for stuff I dont need I jumped on a 2017. Not that I would change out taillights. I don't change lighting that has no benefit to me. Includes tail lights and license plate lights. Someone ought to compile a list of do's and don'ts for the 2018+.

 

I run a pair of spyder taillights. I had to put resistors on them because I put vled turn signals on the front. I guess I'm lucky and don't have any issues. I think the lights look pretty good.

More than likely a blown fuse

Recons here and they make the stock look like cheap Chinese crap.

 

I blew a fuse. I am still deciding on attempting to reinstall them. The dealer gave me two additional fuses. The invoice stated that the "brake" fuse was blown but I could not find it labeled as such in both the under hood and interior fuse box. Does anyone know what fuse this "brake" fuse is and where it is located if I do in fact blow another one...lol. I appreciate everyone's feedback and comments on this topic. I love my new Tundra by the way bu this isn't the pic that I wanted to post...lol.

 

Most electronic stuff from China is crap. They’re cheap to. Like everyone says you Sget what you pay for.

 

Send the chinese crap back and get you some good LED bulbs. That trucks too nice to run "spyder" anything IMO

Kinda joking, kinda not. The 2017 may be the last Tundra I ever own if Toyota continues to make the truck difficult to modify and continues to add on useless, not-fully-tested tech.

I left the OEM bulbs in for the turn signals and brake lights. But upgraded to LEDs for the reverse lights (among a bunch of other LED upgrades). Got them at Headlight Revolution. Not the cheapest but well worth the money. They've got a video showing how to install with specific instructions depending on what you're looking to do. The nice thing is they've gone thru most all the options for each bulb on the truck and hand picked the "best" for each. Give'm a look:

15A Fuse number 10 under the hood called stop. Also one inside that controls your parking lights and uses the same bulb as the brake light. It's number 20 and called tail.

When you plug them in, make sure the direction is correct. It was probably reversed so it blew the fuse.

I had a buddy of mine that paints cars smoke the taillights for me on my other truck and it looked great! Gonna have him do the Tundra too.

 

Never heard of a fuse that was directional, it just completes a circuit. Can you elaborate?
