Good Morning: I have a damaged tone ring on my 04 Tundra, that needs replacing. I took it to the dealer to get a proper diagnosis, and was quoted $550, the repair includes replacing the bearing as well as the ring. I went to a mechanic who says only the ring needs to be replaced, at considerably less money. My question is, does the bearing have to be replaced to do this repair. Thanks to all in advance

It doesnt hurt to go ahead and do the bearings. They're both pretty cheap, the cost comes from having to re press everything when doing the bearings. Machine shop charged me $250 to remove and repress everything plus $30 for the kit.

I agree, might as well replace the bearings and seals while you’re in there. Then you’ll be good for 100k+.

I've done this twice on my 05. It requires a special puller tool to remove the bearing parts, which includes the tone ring. Installing the new parts has to be done nearly perfect for the oil seal to mate up right with the metal ring on the axle shaft. It's a huge pain in the A if done even slightly wrong. You'll have gear lube leaking out the axle ends. I say use the Dealer for this service and do the bearings also. At least they'll warranty their work and all of the parts and you know they have the correct tools and training to do it properly.
