Oil at 5000 miles?

My truck is at 16000. It’s a 2018. I get the free dealer service every 5k, but they will only change the oil at the 10k intervals, as the engine is not the FFV. Fine.

I changed the oil at 5000, then took it to the dealer for the free service and oil change at 10500.

Today, I did the next oil change, at about 5500 miles.

First- I was pissed that they seem to have replaced the skid plate and oil filter cartridge with an impact wrench. Shit it was all damn tight- much tighter than at 5k after purchase when I first changed the oil.

And, the oil looks like crap. It looked clean when I did the 5k change, here it is really dark. Is this normal?

 

I general only do 10k intervals. But it doesn't look to bad.

 

Send it to Blackstone labs. Dealers throw the low cost labor at oil changes. Its not unheard of to have changes not being done when they said they did it.

 

I've never had the dealer do my free oil changes on my 13 FJ Cruiser, or 16 Tacoma. They ain't gonna touch my 19 Tundra. None of my 4 Toyotas in the last 20 yrs have never seen the service department.

 

That’s what concerned me. But- they lost one of the front sheet metal screws, and I had to use a freaking CHEATER BAR to remove the filter cartridge. They did something....

I replaced the plastic housing with a metal one today. Now I’m scared their mental midget will cross thread it.

 

Had a similar experience with my Fiances Rav4. Basically the tech sees it's free service and just ran the Rav4 through the car wash. I check the dipstick afterwards and like you... A engine with 10k miles should not have that dark of oil immediately after an oil change. That's why i'll do whatever DIY maintenance I'm able to. Sure it may take longer but its Peace of Mind knowing its done right. Also, I'm lucky to have an Ex Mechanic for a bro in law for maintenance I can't tackle .

 

9 Toyotas since 1985 for me. And this ^^^ is me too.

 

This is why I'll never take my new tundra in for the oil changes. I did my first oil change myself and will continue to do so every 5k miles. I won't trust someone at the dealer to properly tighten the oil plug or not screw up my filter housing overtightening it.

 

I took my Tundra in to the dealership, they scratched both of my front doors, while performing oil changes.
They did the same thing with an impact gun on oil filter housing and skid plate bolts that screwed into plastic captured nuts on the bumper.
My lesson learned is: do the maintenance your self. You will be the happiest in the end.
I don’t trust the dealerships anymore.

 

The oil is dark like that even after 3k miles.

 

If everything was tight they must have changed the oil. I've never had a case where Toyota dealership forgot to change the oil. I had cases where they forget to lube and it happened with my Tacoma. in an unlikely event that they forgot, you are still close to 10K (11K?) so I wouldn't worry. Going by oil color can get tricky. some cars maintain a better oil color but even then as they age, the oil gets dark sooner than when there were new.

 

Does seem very dark in the picture. I change my oil every 5k and it isn't that dark.

I don't trust the dealership for oil changes either.

 

They also may have used dino oil? Might burn more?

 

When I've mostly run highway miles my Mobil 1 0W20 is still some gold on the dipstick approaching 6,000 miles.

 

I think I may do my 20k oil change at home and compare.

If I can remember, I’ll come back and update. I anticipate my driving routine will be the same as the last 5k.

 

I'd be hosed if I didn't have my dealer here in Columbia, SC. I feel very fortunate to have developed a strong relationship with my service manager and my lead tech. OP - I'd talk to the manager and see what they say. Doesn't seem right. Good luck
