My 08 that I bought used had a bed cap and a bed rug in it had rust under the bed rug when I pulled it. I'm not sure if has anything to do with the recall for the Frame needing to be coated. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow for the recall and see what they say.

Its the reason I removed the drop in liner. It happens to all brand trucks with the plastic drop in liner. usually because they hold moisture underneath them.

There is a TSB out for the bed rusting. I found mine after I was out of warranty so had to repair on my own. The bed rusts from the bottom side up. It could be from your bed liner but the spots that it rusts at are the 4 corners close to the bed bolts. My rust wasn't too bad yet, the paint was bubbling up. I have seen pictures of some that was rusted all the way through.

Wahhh I just found the rust on mine!! :( 2008. Been linex’d since new. Also this truck was factory under coated- twice! Def from the bottom up. It’s for sure the bed floor ‘frame’ that bolts to the chassis that holds the moisture between the bed floor and floor ‘frame’. Damn. I’m sad now.

Bought my 2010 and it had a cap with plastic bed liner. Rust underneath (not terrible) but had it line-x’ed and added a bed rug.

Climate has a lot to do with it. I replaced my 07 OEM plastic liner in 2015. 8 years old. Zero rust, only some minor paint chaffing otherwise bed looked new. I recently removed my RedRug after 3 years so my bed could get removed for the rear end fix. Same thing. Zero rust. BedRugs are breathable so not too worried in my climate zone.

When they switched to using brine for pre-treatment before snow/ ice things got pretty bad. As it was the rock salt would turn into a salt mist that would get everywhere but the brine ramped it up. As the bed flexes places that were sealed open up. One of them seams to be between the supports and the bed floor.

I can remember the old late 80's Toyota pickups. They had bedsides that were made from 3 pieces. Two lower panels were spot welded to the upper bedside then sealed with some sort of compound. After a few years the compound would crack and rust was not far away.

The best solution would be to remove your bed, flip it over, pressure wash it, let it dry, then put an undercoating (not rust proofing) like Fluid film or LPS-3 and let it seep into the seams. I've never had much luck with products like POR-15.

I don’t like that factory undercoating bull crap. It might work if there is not a speck of rust underneath it. But if it’s applied after any sort of rust, you know it’s a breeding ground for cancer. I’d rather nothing so at least I could keep an eye on it. It would take more work but I think if I lived where you guys do, I would be having it professionally sprayed every year with something like fluid film.

Pulled my plastic drop in liner and I have 2 rust spots. I am glad I removed it. The whole bottom was filthy and there was dirt that was wet in the corners along with lots of white rock under the plastic.

I will be finding out soon. I have a 15 and it has always had a tonneau cover. Came with a drop in plastic liner that I plan to remove and replace with a bed mat, maybe at some point I'll DIY roll on bedliner but idk. I'm curious as to what its gonna look like under there.

Truck had LineX the day it was delivered. Started noticing the LineX "bubbling" or pushing up in the areas around where the bed mounts to the frame. Found the rust a little too late to fall under the TSB extended warranty. I can push on where it is bubbling and hear the rust crunching. It bothered me so much every time i accessed the bed of the truck i put in a plastic bed liner to hide it. Toyota straight screwed up. Not a bed liner problem...manufacturing problem.

I would have that entire bed looked at and repaired by a body shop and then get it Line-X'd.

Line-x said they can fix it. They will reprime it then line-x it.

That will work too...just see if they will warranty it on paper so that you're covered....or at least have them let you look at it before they spray it....and you can take pics of the repair at that time.

Unless they will warranty it I wouldn't have them try to fix it. The plastic bed liner didn't touch the bed there. That means the rust most likely is coming up from the underside and if not fixed correctly it'll keep rusting. If nothing else I would try to inspect the underside of the bed in those locations on both sides.

So Line-X is done with my truck and they sanded away the rust and gave me full Line-X warranty plus he took $25 off for me paying cash. $400 for the work I am very happy. I have the warranty on paper.

I'm new to the forum so apologize for the timelines of this; I have an 08 I bought used that had a cap and the bed rug system in it when I purchased it. I had them undercoat the truck when I purchased it; since I've had it I have had it back to them as I was noticing moisture on the rug system in the corner areas. They looked at it sent it to a cap store said it was adjusted or whatever and was good. As I was crawling into the bed a short time ago I too heard the crunching. Finally had an opportunity to look at it the other day and it is not good. What course of action should I take? I found mositure under the rug when I took these and the truck has been dry to my knowledge.

Took my liner out, no rust but a few wear areas. I sprayed it with fluid film and added a weathertech underliner (not pictured) then put my liner back in and hacked it up for a swing case install. I have Hope's the fluid film and underliner will prevent any further damage. I also garage my truck and its had a bak revolver x2 tonneau that keeps out 99% of water for about half its life.

I kind of wish I had sprayed it with hydro2 or some kind of sealant then dried it and then fluid filmed. I think the fluid film will work fine though, its really not going to be disturbed

That rust is coming from the outside of the bed not the inside, it is a design flaw in the way the beds are made.

Just actually got rid of my OEM bed liner today because I was worried about rust. I also removed my bed rails underneath which was apparently holding it snug in there so then it was just sitting back there all loose. It was driving me crazy. My bed looks pretty good though thankfully, I think the previous owner had it covered most of the time. Some mud built up in the corners but no rust. Called around and line X wants 700 to do my bed and rhino wants 500 and some change. Yeesh, thinking I’ll just get a mat or a rug for now.

I think a lot of that bad rust is coming up through from the bottom where the cross-rails support the bed. I've fluid filmed a couple Tundras and its those areas underneath that get rusted up pretty bad. Have to drop the spare tire to get the rear most cross-rail sprayed real good.
