Check out Alamosa, CO. Located in the San Luis Valley and quite close to numerous 13 and 14 thousand foot mountains. Wyoming is on my radar. Small population, nice views, and most importantly...........2nd Amendment isn't messed with.

Another recommendation for Arizona. If you can live just beyond the normal commuting distance to the larger cities the cost of housing drops significantly and is inexpensive compared to the national average. I like Tucson since it is large enough to have a lot of the amenities of a larger city without as many of the problems associated with a larger city. Cost of living is average but drops off quickly as you get further from the city.

You're lucky you're coming from the east. Everyone has great recommendations and a welcoming attitude. If you were from Cali everybody would be telling you to fuck off!

    Lol! So true!
He’s voting WITH us, not AGAINST us! :D

Sometimes I feel bad for the folks that rent cars around here that have CA plates.
I’m pretty sure it was bread into our blood many decades ago to not treat them with the same kindness as WA and OR plated vehicles :p

When I visited relatives in Oregon and Utah I would place a piece of tape on the back window stating, "just visiting" so they wouldn't vandalize my truck.

Cost to buy or rent housing. I can't speak to the crime.

Edit: as someone said above, even if you find work, the types of employment tend to be tourist-supported/ dependent. I don't think the local economy will survive a recession.

ColoradoTJ just gave you a small glimpse into Southern Utah! It is truly paradise.
I moved from Comifornia to Southern Utah in 2009 and a lot of folks followed me. Check out St George and Cedar city. Best hunting, fishing, and wheeling place on the planet. Bring all your guns with you, Utah ain’t scared!

Utah is by far the cleanest place i have ever visited. I saw 1 homeless person total, at a rest stop on a major highway. Here in CA, we are giving the state to the homeless.

There was not 1 piece of trash on the ground in utah. The state is amazing. If i won the lottery i would move there and retire

We actually love Knoxville but it doesn't have everything we're looking for. Our families have moves away. We figure we can always move back if it doesn't work out.

My background is logistics/transportation/operations. My wife has worked in insurance and now for a title company. We're both around 30, no where near retirement. I wouldn't rule out a career change if it meant living someplace we love.

The Pac NW is definitely appealing to us. We didn't love Portland when we visited. So many homeless and the city was just dirty. The only draw to Vancouver is that I could actually transfer with my company and my best friend lives there. Appreciate the feedback.

Sorta scrolled through without reading everything.
Yuma, AZ not too bad. Summers are hot but Colorado River is 20 mins away. Lots of off-roading. San Diego is 2.5 hrs west, Phoenix is 2.5 hrs east, Vegas is 4.5 hrs north. Gun laws are the best in nation, gas is cheap.
Did I say summers are hot?

Gotcha. I just got back from Phoenix, strange, it was colder there this week than it was in SC. I've been to Northern AZ, wouldn't mind being there myself. Wife loved Williams AZ when we went there and she still talks about it.

Good point on cost of living. I should emphasize we JUST started our search. If Tahoe is that expensive we'll probably rule it out. I recognize that anywhere we move is going to be more expensive than where we currently live. Tennessee is cheap.

Actually AK is like the wild west when it comes to gun laws and Wyoming not far behind. Spent some time in Yuma while in the Corps. Very nice area but too dang hot for me.

Lots of agriculture related jobs and Adam's State College is there. Plenty of jobs to be had.....but not the highest pay for sure but the cost of living isn't bad at all there. Cheyenne Wyoming is bad either.

if you wanna keep your guns the way they are I would pick Eastern Sierras on the Nevada side or Arizona, Prescott side.

    Ha! Awesome
    :D
If you move to Vancouver, let me know. My business is exactly that.

BUT - UT and AZ might be a better fit. Because WA is hoping on the mag-ban train. Very hard to stomach. Hope it doesn’t happen.

Never mind - sounds like you have a job nailed down if you move here lol.
Check out Washougal WA - Carson Wa, La Center WA - all accessible to Vancouver. But much better IMO.
We’re in Ridgefield, and looked at land in all of the above mentioned.

Check out Spokane Washington, and surrounding areas even into Idaho like Coeur d'Alene(harsher winter's but bigger cities for work) Or go south to Clarkston Wa/Lewiston Id. They are in a nice valley and usually not harsh winter's. Mountians 10-20 minutes away. Snake River and sand beaches are awesome year round for fishing and even better for recreational fun during the summer. Hells canyon. University of Idaho and Washington State University within 35 miles. Spokane 2.5 hours away and Boise ID about 4(best places for concerts and sporting events, both cities rotate hosting first two rounds of NCAA basketball tournament). Idaho is better for gun laws. Cheaper living than Washington. Eventually I'd like to move back there again myself.
