I too have a 2108 Tundra with the malfunctioning OEM brake controller, flashing brake warning light and sporadic “trailer disconnected” warning light.
My question is, rather than wasting my time making numerous trips to the dealership for them to blindly attempt various fixes, can I easily install a P3 brake controller and be done with it?

Yes, you can unplug the factory controller and replace it with the p3. I believe someone has created a custom mount to fit in the factory location as well.

I don't think they've gotten a harness out for the 2018 or 2019 Tundra's. If that's the case, then one would have to hardwire the P3 in. There was also another issue with putting a external brake controller on... something about 1 line not in place - think it was the 12 volt charging line but don't take that as gospel.

For what its worth....I have been having the same issues, no brakes on trailer too. Finally after calling the 800.331.4331 number and speaking with "Patty" she did some digging and was super helpful. Unlike the dealership trip after trip back she actually got some answers. After reviewing the problem with her yesterday she promised to be back to me today and she was as promised. FINALLY Toyota acknowledges that the software needs to be changed and they will have a factory rep at the dealership to update and fix the problem. Today when she called back to inform me of the good news, she also stated a service bulletin will soon be out on this fix. I have a appt at the dealership and hope to have this fixed once and for all! I highly suggest that you call Patty at the number I provided, she said she herself had no previous calls on this. I told her that the internet was full of complaints on this. She was super helpful.

I seriously hope this is accurate. We need a fix pronto on this. It is ridiculous to need to buy an aftermarket unit to have a functional work truck

Are you going in with a factory Toyota TB controller or aftermarket? Also sorry if you already answered these elsewhere, if factory did you buy it after the fact or did the truck come with it when the truck was purchased? Thanks

Update: After two trips back to the dealer, finally a guy from Toyota came out and installed an update or something to solve my "no brake" issue. He changed something in the software that totally fixed it and brakes on trailer work like they are supposed to. Claims a service bulletin is in the making but I suggest you contact Patty at 800.331.4331.

Could it be? A Toyota fix for their crappy brake controller, ending the 10 threads here on the problem that doesn't exist?

I hope so. It would be great if Toyota realized many of us are going camping soon and would rather not hurt ourselves or others on the road.

I don't have a brake controller on my 2008, but have been reading this thread as I am adding one. Although the title says this is regarding the P3 brake controller, am I correct in my understanding that this is not the stock controller, right? I have ordered the P3 controller and will be installing it this weekend, so I will not need an firmware update, correct, since it is aftermarket and not the Toyota one?

I called Toyota this morning to see if there was a TSB anyone was aware of. You can't ask for Patty unless you have an extension because it's a call center. If you have her extension, I'll call her.

The guy I spoke to was nice but knew nothing really. He said it's possible a TSB is in the works and for now, maybe field techs are coming out and administering the fix/update until the release.

So anyone aware of a TSB yet? If not, I'll call Toyota next week see what they say.

Called today to schedule my 10k service. I asked the service writer if they were familiar with factory Integrated Brake controller issues. Shocker: They were clueless...or played dumb at least.
