It is a nice feature, I kinda like it but I like reliability better.

Pretty cool feature until someone steals it or it breaks and then you’re out a couple grand.

Agreed, friend of mine had to replace the gate on his 2018 gmc2500 and it was pushing $800 for the parts. The new multimatic I bet will be like 2k to replace. For what I use my truck for all I could imagine is that thing getting clogged up with dirt, gravel and mulch and then but functioning. I also don't like the idea of not having an actual tailgatehandle as well.

I do think it's pretty awesome that Ram jumped right back at GM though.

It's a cool feature, but these manufacturers are acting like they discovered how to make the truck run on water or something. It's a freaking tailgate, let's not go crazy here.

Just one more part to break. Totally agree, this is the kind of totally worthless BS driving up the price of new trucks

With the way things have unfolded, I wish ford never came out with the king ranch trim in the early 2000s. That was the first “luxury” trim that started this whole truck war. XL, XLT, and Lariat is what should have been the three trims, or Limited for the tundra top trim instead of 1794. Absolutely ridiculous the things that people say they need in a truck these days when they probably don’t even need a truck at all.

The gmc is nice looking truck. Tailgate is cool but I don’t care much about it (still not as cool as my CM’s rear window rolling down) the plans chrsysler patent seem useless to me and the picture shown is ugly with the gap in the foldable tailgate.

I think a tailgate that has a foldout ramp built in for loading toys would be sick. Maybe I should grab the patent.

I bet with the next generation trucks after these new ones rolling out, we’ll see top trim levels touch close to 100 grand.

Just curious, what about this design is more useful than a regular tailgate?

I have the bed anyways full of tools, I could open just the 40 portion of that gate if I needed to haul an extended ladder or lumber instead of the whole gate down. This keeping my tools from failing out. They also say multiple positions in the description, hopefully you can have it sit half way down as well. My 1st Gen Colorado was like that and it was great, simple to as you just moved the tailgate cable.

With that design as well I don't have to remove the tailgate when I have pallets placed in the bed.

Also by opening sideways I can get into the bed easier with my trailer hooked up instead of worrying about it dropping down onto the tongue Jack.

SUVs are pretty much already there. Looked at a few at an auto show a couple of weeks ago. Anything full size was 80+.

My Dad has an 2014 Ford and his tailgate comes with a small step that pulls out of the gate, which i've always really liked. It's a little crude but simple enough and makes getting in/out of the bed much easier and safer. it ain't pretty but it works.

The more moving parts you have, more chance of things breaking or needing more maintenance. I deal with it everyday!! I agree that it is a cool feature. Do I want it? No!

I'm sure there's utility in it, and I could get on board with something like the Honda Ridgeline has where the door can open up/down or left/right, but the split down the tailgate just doesn't look right to me.
