Need better gas mileage out of my 5.7

This was the SUV to have when they came out. I love it!

That combo made my fuel mileage worse. Just a heads up.

 

Lol at better gas mileage talk... we bought the worse truck for gas.. it's a lost cause guys.. smh

 

OK seriously no bull shit here.

I burned two tanks of gas today running these 37's at 60psi. I averaged 14mpg at 75mph. 13.97 first tank and 14.2 second tank.

Tall skinny tires work for getting better mpg. My Tacos did the same thing.

Those 325/60 R20's that came on it were getting 10 to 11 on the highway. PSI was at 32.

I was not hyper mpg driving. Completely normal driving and getting on the highway like I wanted to get on.

 

I have a 2013 with a 5.7, any idea’s how to get better gas mileage?

 

My plan is a TRD air filter, TRD exhaust, and not to drive like a bat out of Hell. I'm very happy getting 15.5 to 16 MPG driving a 4X4 CrewMax with a 5.7. Well worth it!

 

Best I’ve got in town was 13 mpg with the 5.7, bought it new in ‘13 and now it only has 24000+ miles so really it’s not broke in is my guess

 

Ways to increase Mileage,
Lower engine rpm's by;
Gear ratio change, Replace the Mud tires with HWY tires. Change the aerodynamics of the ride. Drive on cruise control, cold air box is an oxymoron! It funnels outside air into the filter already. Muffler change might get you 1 mpg but the noise is not worth the drone.i have a Tonnau cover over the bed, definitely helps.
Stock driving on Cruise I get 19+ with HWY tires on flat ground.

Ways to decrease the Mileage,
Jack it up
Get the most agressive tread mud grips even though you never leave pavement.

 

Buy a Prius.

Sorry, my OCD.... The tow package has a 4:30 ratio (lower than 4:10s). The trucks without the tow package usually have a 3:90 ratio, which it higher.

 

I recommend pushing it ... or only driving it downhill.

 

I filled up with 21 gallons today, I had 218 miles on the trip odometer.
My computer is reading 11.8 but the telling me its not that good. Pretty much all stock. Winter fuel, warm it up every morning, stop and go trips, most of my driving is short 2-5 mile trips.
I get 14 in the summer and once got 16.5 on a long road trip.

To compare in my old Tacoma 4.0 I would get 13 winter, 16 summer, 19 on road trips. Difference is negligible to me for the trade for more power and comfort. I do wish I had a larger tank but can't just the cost.

 

There are a lot of things we can do to our trucks to improve gas mileage, but when all is said and done you may pick up 1 or 2 mpg. Is it really worth it, probably not.

 

Just wanna thank all of you for a good laugh and a reminder of why I bought a tundra.

Or a motorcycle, my BMW has been getting 40-50mpg. My wifes Honda gets 70mpg.

 

I removed the carbon filter under the top of the air box. Just used my old soldering iron and melted the plastic welds. I gained 1 mpg just removing it alone.

 

Yep on the Tacoma. I drive a Tacoma all day for my job, it gets terrible gas mileage. But it's a tough little truck, never breaks down, I have to go off road with it too and it always does great, great work truck, but bad gas mileage...

 

Yep, I'm not adding a tonneau cover for 0.5mpg gain, I'd rather install the 38 gallon tank and fill up less. Right now, fuelly says I'm averaging 14mpg, and I mostly drive to and from work, which means stop and go, and some highway driving on the weekends. I'm right in the bell curve average of 14mpg for 2011 Tundra with the 5.7.

I ended up adding a hard tonneau cover to mine, it helps keep me stable in crosswinds but I don't know that it has improved my mpg's or not - I don't really care.

 

I bought a old 2002 honda accord. It gets 28-30 mpg. paid 1k. Its used as a daily commuter. I save about 100 bucks a month in gas plus wear and tear on the tundra. I drive the tundra on the weekend, trips. Camping, haul things, load moto's, etc.

I enjoy the tundra more when I don't drive it everyday. It gets 15 mpg.. trd intake and stock wheels and tires. The front is level.

Not much you can do to get better gas. You can buy a newer ford with 10speed trans.. But it will double or triple the cost of the tundra.
