**Update 11Feb: Ford replacing the entire PCM (combined complete engine / transmission controller) under waranty. They say the noises I was hearing are normal.

    **Original Content**
I was pretty set on a Tundra for full-timing in an ~8000-8500lb Airstream in a vehicle that was also capable on the trails. However, after crunching some real numbers and some further research, I decided that deliberately planning to operate at 97-99% of the Tundra's GCWR was probably not the best idea.

Now, I've got 1500 miles on my bought-new 2019 F250, and I am already getting ready to drop it off for the following issues:

    1) Notable driveline clunk when transitioning from coasting to throttle.

    2) Severe gear whine in 4Low.

    3) Loud ticking coming from the engine above ~1700rpm.

    4) Got a CEL today when I hit the curise control "set speed" button, which put the engine into limp mode. Everything else checked nornal, and fortunately after I turned off and restarted the engine, everything has functioned normally.

I specifically bought a new vehicle so I wouldnt have to deal with shit like this.

Fucking American vehicles. Seriously, I shoulda bought the Tundra and just accepted that the numbers wouldnt look good.

    /Rant

Linden, this may/may not help. First, I'll hope this is a temp. setback for you and the truck gets straightened out. Broadly speaking that is a really well regarded vehicle you made a good choice so let's just hope it gets right.
That said, I tow a 25' FC with our Tundra because it's reliable and yeah I had open eyes when looking at the payload numbers. The truck has everything you could wish for in a daily driver plus reliably hauling a trailer. If push comes to shove I'd do it again despite not ever being able to load ALOT of cr@p into the bed. FWIIW my #2 choice was a toss up between your truck and a Chebby 2500.
Rant away, hope for the best.

They are talking about the 2021 Tundra having better towing capabilities, might be worth the wait.

Can you be a little more specific? No worries if you can't. I'm interested in better payload for sure. After I put 7-800 lbs on the ball that leaves not much leftover for putting "stuff" in the bed....I can live with that but man it sure would be nice to have a bit more. LOL if I'm being totally honest what I'd really like is a Tundra "HD" and I'd settle down ;)

Well, I would be more specific if Toyota would be..............It's all just rumors at this point. Best to ride that F-250 as far through the warranty period as you can stand before dumping it especially if a "better" Toyota is available by then. JMHO

My tundra is the only Veh. I’ve ever owned 3+ Years and still love it like the Day I bought it ! Like most of us we’ve been through countless rigs, and It takes a lot to “WoW “ a veteran! If you ever do switch I think you’ll be the same way !

I almost purchased a 16 F350. Thankfully my buddy has had so many issues with his I jumped ship and went with the GMC DM. His current issue is he loses all dash display, but continues to run. He has narrowed it down to the parking brake relay somehow. Weird though, all my friends with the 11-14 F series diesels haven’t had many issues.

I’m just assuming you have the diesel, so disregard if you have the 6.2L. Daily driving these trucks just kill them, unless it’s daily driven with a load or long distances. The friend that has the 16 F350 quit DD his and hasn’t had an issue since.

If you don't like the ticking of the Ford, you are gonna hate the sound of the Tundra engine. The Tundra motor is one, noisy mofo.

I hate starting mine in sub freezing weather so much, I wear ear plugs.

Sigh. When I first realized I probably needed a 3/4 ton truck (Id be operating right around GCWR and above payload rating with planned loads in a Tundra), I did a lot of digging to determine the best option. I certainly don't think I could have done better with a GM
or Dodge, but damn it is still disappointing that this is the "best" the Big 3 have to offer. Jesus.

Still...would you guys travel 10k miles a year at 16k GCW in a Tundra? One of the big things that always swayed me were the tons of anecdotes about increased towing stability when moving up from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton with the same loads. However, at this point, I am not unwilling to accept going 5mph slower if I'll actually be able to count on the truck to get me home.

My wife's 2016 4Runner TRDP rattles like an old diesel when cold, and I hated that too. However, they all do it, plus Car and Driver reported it is the most common vehicle on the road among those with over 300k miles.

After a few months of perusing forums and blogs for American trucks, it is pretty clear that the cultural focus on longevity found in import circles does not really exist in the domestic world. It doesnt seem uncommon for domestic loyalists to expect to buy a vehicle every few to several years, and I have always perceived (a notion supported by my experience here) that domestic makers build to this expectation. Case-in-point that truck magazines always bitch about the Tundra being "dated," while domestic trucks are getting new powertrains and interior refreshes every few years.

    Sorry, I'm just annoyed.

I had a 2013 F250 6.7 Powerstroke and it was awesome! 800lbs of torque would launch that 8,400lb truck into orbit from a cold stop. The bulletproof transmission never balked once at towing my 10,000lb bumper pull travel trailer up mountains on the Kenai peninsula in Alaska. I achieved 22mpg when cruising empty at a reasonable speed. And yet...

The DEF system caused so many thrown codes and pushed me into limp mode at least once a quarter. The DPF and EGR threatened to choke the engine with recycled soot being forced back into the intake. Did I mention the DEF contamination code that would have been a $4,000 repair if the tech hadn’t gone against the repair protocol and just wiped the reservoir clean.

In the end, I loved the power and usual performance of the truck. But a $60,000 XLT (mid-level trim) threatened constantly to strand me and my family because of all the EPA and Ford engineering. I sold that truck last December and got my 2018 Tundra. It felt at first like a Matchbox truck, but it’s grown on me. Most importantly, I TRUST this truck—that it will start, run, and run, and run. It doesn’t have the power, it doesn’t have the payload, it doesn’t have the size and weight, but I couldn’t care less. I don’t regret getting the Tundra—not for a second.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your new Ford. I'd like to share a bit about what I learned with Ford when addressing issues with their vehicle and encourage you to get a case open with Ford as quickly as possible. I opened a case because I was not satisfied with the response from the dealer when I first brought my vehicle in.

After I opened the case, Ford offered everything from a free extended warranty (5/60) to fly an engineer down from Detroit to evaluate the vehicle and/or take it back up there to repair. I ultimately was able to sell the vehicle back to them with the depreciation calculation based on when I first reported the issue (~$250). By no means am I advocating that you sell your vehicle back as much as I am moving your issue out of your local dealers hands and in to the Ford engineers hands to get to the root of a problem that hasn't been addressed yet in the material the mechanics at the dealership reference. The process for them to buy the vehicle back was VERY painful and took a lot of time.

Not a chance I’d buy a tundra for that kinda load OP. If you get sick of the ford maybe check out the dodge 2500.

    I would also go diesel.

Man that sucks, but you're doing it right with the safety numbers. Full time pulling that weight with a Tundra would have me white knuckling and exhausted all the time, 7.5K wet is about my limit and that's flatlanding locally, I'd go 3/4T or 1T if it was full time. Hope it all gets resolved, my buddy bought a new F250 last year, pulls a heavy TT, no issues so far. Reliability is one thing you don't notice until it's not there, the quiet beauty of a Tundra.

First off sorry about your troubles. With that said I am 47 and my brother is 45. We both started our careers in a Chrysler dealership. Neither will buy a fiat Chrysler vehicle ever. For 20 years he’s been a master Gm tech. He loves them he makes a lot of money fixing GM mistakes. As for me 20 years working on Fords for the government . Long stoy short I bought s smaller travel trailer that my tundra can handle safely. I don’t want to work on cars when I’m off work. Toyota from now on, I will live with a lighter trailer and no issues.
    Good luck

Sorry to hear of your troubles - that sucks. A few things:

    1. You made the right choice in not getting a Tundra for pulling what you describe. You would be too close, and probably over in a few cases. Much better to play it safe. Way too many people haul and or tow over capacity - and that sucks. Things can change in the blink of an eye and lives can forever be altered because of it.
    2. Even the almighty Tundra has issues. My Tundra has been the 3rd most problematic vehicle I have ever owned. I think someone above said something about "American made"? Well, everyone always jumps on ship on this board and says the tired line "the Tundra is the most American made......blah blah blah". Even the design center is here.
    3. Hopefully it is just something small and relatively easy to fix. For all of the horror stories I hear about any line of vehicle on vehicle forums - I hear even more successful ones in real life.

    Good luck.

I thought only the Toyota vehicles made in Japan are reliable when first shopping for a vehicle and it worried me about the American made tundra but I’ve got close to 70,000 miles on my 2014 and not a single issue which is good for buying the first model year of the “refreshed” new tundra.

Not to rub salt in a wound, 30+K miles of no issues. Ford is not on the top of the big three, just look at any testing video. Hell, the Fords are the only ones on TFL that have broken down or gone into limp mode on these tests. Tells you everything one needs to know. If my principles were none existent, I would have looked at a Ram. However, I will never own another, no matter how “good” they are.

One question, and be honest: You daily drive your diesel don’t you?

Wow reading this read makes me feel great about my ‘15 tundra I bought 4 months ago. I’m not towing a lot but I looked at all the big 3 options and went forctundra. I love it. Yes it’s loud on start up but a great driving truck. Also in regards to the ‘20’21 tundra I hear they are working on improving the tow capacity as well as improving the transmission to an 8, or 10 speed to improve gas mileage.

Hate to hear you having issues with the 250. I have had 7.3 wished I kept 6.4 then got a 2014 F350 6.7. I ended up trading in on my Tundra. Loved the fords but the DEF went out 3 times. I had to pay 2000K. Then front up had a death wopple. Front replace 2 times by ford. Then I spend 3000K on the front in again and did all new shocks and steering stabilizer. Coolint being to leak. Don’t get me wrong the 6.7 will haul the mail!!! But truck payment on top of me having issues every other month. I was sick out it. I hope one day Ford can get back like it used to be. Just good luck with it.
