Which way is correct or does it matter

I was looking over an ad on eBay and noticed the sway bar installed two different ways. It had me second guessing myself as to what is the correct way with the u bolt or does it matter.

 

Top picture is the correct way.

That's just my opinion (and I think the way the install instructions read), some install it like in the top picture for off-road clearance of their accessory that really kinda wasn't intended to apply for hardcore off-road use. It may not actually matter, do as you like.

 

This is how mine is installed from the factory....looks like the top picture to me.

 

Looks like the bottom picture to me, see where the U-bolts hold it to the axle?

The main thing is to keep those arms as level as possible to the ground once the install is complete.

 

Yes it matters, and Both are correct.
Look at the leaf spring pack in relation to the axle and you will discover why.
Also look at the the length of the end link bars.

 

Top picture looks like a whole different setup. Is that a Tundra? Looks like a Tundra axle, but the axle is on top of the spring pack.

 

The top picture is of a rear suspension lowered by relocating the leaf springs under the axle, the bottom picture shows a standard set up. The rear of my truck is lowered, and the bar is installed correctly.

 

This is the most correct answer of them all. Static ride height - level as possible. No mounting location is "incorrect" so swivel them whereever it needs to be.

There is a specific reason for the two different installations.

Yeah, it's the correct answer. You're both saying the same thing. If it weren't the correct answer, you wouldn't need to use shorter links when you lower the rear. Think what kind of problems you'd encounter if the arms of the bar were very far off a level state.

 

Lowered = Sway bar on the back of the axle and above the leaf spring, short end link bars.

Standard = sway bar under the axle and bellow the leaf spring, long end link bars.

 

Also add lifted, swaybar on the back of the axle for ground clearance. This also keeps the bar level. Avoiding extended links.

 

Is there a picture of the bar on a lifted truck?, I must have missed it.

The end link bars are as long as the sway bar!

 

Ha ha ha! That’s post number three. Those are really long! It’s post number 2 with the standard links. But if you rotate it to the back of the rear end like your lowered truck, it works well for a small lift. I don’t think any position of the sway bar mounted to the rear end is improper, as long as the bar and links are close to level.

 

Let me know the specific reasons as I’m not sure if upside down is right side up.

Hellwig was very specific about those arms being level to the ground. They were very unspecific when it comes to the U (around the diff) pointing up or down. Even their picture was confusing.

Regardless, the 7700 Hellwig for 1st Gen is super nice. My U points down.

I love the Hellwig on my 1st gen... not sure about the 'U', but you definitely want the arms that reach back to the links to be as level horizontally as possible while keeping the link rods as straight as possible vertically.

 

This is the “correct” way. The other way is for when you lifted the rear a little to high. It helps your endlink angles supposedly. Thats what a rep at Sparks Parts told me.

 

Is this a worthwhile investment ?

Hellwig 7700 is not perfectly flat when laid on the ground. It can be installed upside down or rightside up.

I see we agree on the sway arms needing to be level with ground.

Which way should the U point? Down or up?
