After selecting 4WD, it seems like the time it takes for the 4Hi light to stop flashing and for the 4WD Hi to engage varies but it usually takes my truck 5-10 seconds for the 4WD to engage (speed usually around 20-30 MPH).

When disengaging the 4WD and going back to 2WD, the truck will disengage fairly quickly sometimes while at other times I will need to slow or nearly stop before the 4WD disengages and I hear the slight thump and the light goes out (again, speeds less than 40 MPH).

Is this typical and, if not, is there anything that I can do to lube or otherwise fix the mechanism to make it work better? I shift in and out of 4WD fairly often on a daily basis and it seems like the shift takes less time after a few shifts in and out of 4WD each day.

    Thanks

I generally do not engage or disengage while moving.

Our trucks can engage and disengage in and out of 4hi, I think the manual say no faster then 50mph or 60mph. I generally don’t go any faster then 20mph to 30mph. Mine also does the same thing in regards to different lengths of time when the light goes off. I believe this normal and it is what it is type thing.

It helps to not be under constant load. If engaging I’ll kind of feather the gas pedal and it goes in quicker. Similar to shifting a motorcycle without a clutch, roll off power while applying pressure to the shift lever and it goes to the next gear smooth.

Takes longer if sitting still or at a steady throttle.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like it's working the way it's supposed to.

Agreed. I've experienced almost exactly what you have described too.

It can take time for the actuator to line up. Sometimes it’s set perfectly, sometimes it takes a few seconds to line up.

My 2017 is like that and so was my 2008 Tacoma before that.

Sounds just like my truck as well. Have noticed that the shift in/out seems to be quicker when rolling and coming off the gas and just coasting during the shift
