Trail Cam Mystery

I went out yesterday to check my trail cam at the huntclub. I saw that there was a few people who kept driving by to the end of the field I was set up on about a dozen or so times so I went to investigate and found a bunch of beer cans littered around and what appears to be them sifting through dirt from the middle of the forest. i’m not aware of any civil war battles or other historical significance in the area, and judging by the guys sleeveless t-shirt and love for natty light, I doubt he is an archeologist. Any idea what he might be up to?

Seriously though thats pretty weird, think I would have to go ask em what in the hell they are doing.

 

Sifting for oil?

 

He's definitely classifying the soil to find something, possibly gold. He may be collecting samples to go and pan near a water supply to see if there's a reason to come back with a legit setup.

 

Truffles. They're looking for Truffles.

 

Did they build/use/leave that hoist setup and the buckets?
Edit: Is that just a screen hung from the tree, for sifting, not a hoist?

Not a hoist. It's just another sift suspended from a rope.

It's the hunt club I belong too. It's leased. I don't think what they are doing is illegal, I was just more annoyed by all their trash left behind. I'm really just curious on what they are doing. It's just bizarre.
