All we ever saw were little puffs of smoke and dust when they hit the dirt. The first one fell in front of the lead guy in the group, maybe a km away. The u-turns were impressive.

We hung out on the east side of the tracks for about 30 mins and watched. It was pretty unreal.

< 1 km for sure. We came up on a small, (bombed out) rusty, yellow tank, just inside the far edge of a circle formed of partially embedded tires. As soon as we pulled up next to the tires, we saw the smoke come up across the circle. Soon after (before anyone got out of a truck), others arriving pointed out planes, and the efficiency of our Group Think improved pretty quickly; radio traffic was pretty much layer upon layer of, 'back out'; 'What the Fuck?!!'; 'turn around!'; and, 'get the fuck out!!'. For that many trucks, the group turn-around and retreat time was pretty impressive. One truck got a flat getting back over some railroad tracks, which was the reason we stayed to watch a few minutes. Here's a couple of pics.

From across the tracks, looking back:
    IMG_5914.jpg
(It was more impressive when we were ~100 yards from one of those puffs of smoke.)

A while later, after driving west, we doubled back toward the range and, from a few miles away, could see something much larger was being sent down:
    IMG_5926.jpg

    * I don't know if anyone got pics of the tank and circle of tires; we really did haul as to leave ASAP.

I'll see if @Marty McFly can have his publicist post the video I took, showing one of the planes pass, then the result below.

I was following the buggy. I'm always leading a group so it was nice to turn off my brain and just drive and follow someone. I really had no clue where we were. I even drove over the tracks and didn't even see the sign. When we got to the tank I thought it was super cool desert art and I was a hot second away from jumping out of The Truck and climbing into that fckr. Then I saw a flash, a flame, and a puff of white smoke directly in front of me; about 25 yards. 15 yards in front of the buggy. At first I thought someone lit off some fireworks of some sort, but I was like, damn that was a big one! Then the guys started calling out planes and bombing range and get the fck out so I turned around made my own line out to the tracks haha I think I left a few guys behind, but serves them right for not keeping up

@eccracer104 , how'd it go with your gang the rest of the day? That sand rail and the quads didn't stick around long.

Rest of the day was great! After we we're bombed and told to leave myself and a few others ran into town to gas up, went back to camp to chill for awhile, I went for a ride with @papasmurf and learned how fucking awesome a 5.7L with long travel and 37"s is!
Went to get my buddy un-stuck from the sand (which a few hours later he got stuck almost exactly the same way on another dune).
Cruised out to Sand Dam and watched some side by sides rip up it and tacos attempt to get up it, sand was super soft this year there.

Had a great time! I'm glad so many made it out!
