I have a 2004 Tacoma with 245,000 miles that needs work and I don’t want to dump another $1500 dollars in it. I am looking to upgrade to a Tundra as the Tacoma is tight fitting our 3 growing kiddos in the back seat. I am debating the 4.6 and 5.7 engine. I drive around 300 miles a week for work & leisure. How much would i get killed in gas getting a 5.7l vs a 4.6l V8?
    Should I get the 4.6L?

Not a huge difference in mpg but there is a difference. If you leave it stock, drive a-lot of highway and don’t need the extra umf of a 5.7. The 4.6 is a good engine. I suggest test driving both. Most will say get the 5.7 because the mpgs are close and better to have and not need etc. but the 4.6 ain’t no slouch!

Gas is cheap. Should be cheap until the world ends in 12 years supposedly. Get the 5.7L and super charge it...

Thank you for the response. Guess it will really just come down to what is available and cost of the vehicles. It is going to be tight affording another car payment after years of having the Tacoma paid off so was just trying to save on gas if could. Can’t see getting anything other than Toyota as the reliability outways the better gas mileage of the other brands IMO

The 4.6 is cheaper to buy but you lose some on the resale. I have a 4.6 and I have no problems with it. If you have concerns about gas mileage both motors are close. If you ever plan on towing something big get the 5.7. They have to stuff standard that keeps the engine and transmission cooler.

Both are great engines in my opinion. My first Tundra was a ‘14 doublecab 4x4 with a 4.6l. It had a lot of Pep with its 310hp and would shove ya back when you gassed it. If your not really needing to tow anything major you can get away with the 4.6. If towing heavy you’ll need the 5.7.

My 2011 DC with the 4.6 averaged 16.5 MPG.
My 2016 Sequoia with 5.7 averages 15.5 MPG
Not that. much difference in power off the line. Don't know about top end power.

I’ve had both and when stock the difference is hardly noticeable in my opinion. Never towed in either so nothing to say about that.

I had a 4.6 in a sequoia that was bulletproof for 130k. I have the 5.7 in the tundra. Mileage is a little hard to gauge because I don't check it and the tundra has a 38 gallon tank where the sequoia had the 26 gallon. Trucks burn gas so I really can't change that. The 4.6 doesn't have a tow package and struggled with towing compared to the 5.7. It comes down to the gearing more than the horsepower. Both are excellent, but I will say that my 5.7 has the dreaded camshaft tower oil leak after 6000 gentle miles. Don't be afraid to tow with the 4.6. The sequoia towed the same camper that the tundra now tows and did so for 5 years.

Agree...the only thing I would add is the price point, you can get some pretty good deals on the on the 4.6 as the 5.7's tend to be more desirable. I was looking more at the cost angle and found 4.6 CrewMax for almost 10K off when all said and done. For my needs i haven't needed anything more.

What year Sequoia? I didn’t know they put the 4.6 in them as an option. I have the 1st gen Sequoia with the 4.7. I always forget about the 4.6 having the different gears. I bet they would feel even more sporty with the better gears.

My 5.7 has 25,xxx miles. So far so good on the cam tower leak. Just looked yesterday and am relieved it’s still dry!

I had a brand new 2016 tundra 2wd with the 4.6 for about 5 weeks, traded for a 2014 4wd 5.7 tundra. The biggest reason was the lack of power in the 4.6. I was coming from a 2002 tundra with a 4.7. The 4.6L could not move the big tundra fast enough if I needed to quickly change lanes or pass someone.
As others have said the 5.7 has better resale value and better towing ability

The 38g tank is nice. Something to consider not sure if available on the 4.6. Not all 5.7s have. Just something that might tip the scales one way or another

The 4.6 may get 1 mpg more than the 5.7 and it sounds insignificant but imo, a 12 mpg to 13 mpg increase is a 9.25% increase in gas mileage and that much less spent at the pump. 20 mpg to 21 isn’t a big deal, 12 mpg to 13 is.

I think for your needs the smaller engine would do fine. Unless like others have said that you haul anything large. I went with the 5.7 as I have to haul some heave loads from time to time and really wanted to have that extra power. From what I hear the mpg is negligible but you will get slightly better. I had to buy my tundra after my last truck was nickel and diming me every month. So I decided I either pay repair costs or just make a payment. It has made things tighter since we only had one payment and got used to that. The 5.7 does have the better resale value if that means anything to you. Also get 4x4. I know you may not ever need it but you will be glad you do when you do. Always had it. Very rarely use it but it sure comes in handy. The reason I bought the tundra over the Tacoma was my wife and I are planning on having some kids in the near future and we needed a vehicle that would do the hauling quite easily. Her Jeep just doesn’t cut it. Good luck on your search. Either engine size will work for you but one will work better. Just depending on what ya need.

I’m wondering if regearing the 4.6 L rearend to say 4.33 or 4.88 would help with gas mileage. I bet it would.

I believe the 4.6 has a smaller rear end, not sure what if any aftermarket gears are availible. Plus the cost to regear, you could just get the 5.7

I’m just more curious I guess. Maybe for some of that already has the 4.6 L and loves their truck but would like to see what they could get out of it. @Darkness regeared his first gen and gained a few mpgs.

My old 02 ram with a 4.7 L was re-geared by me from 355 to 4 tens and I gained about 1 MPG or better at times.

    Alot of them
That is due to the throttle delay that Toyota has. I have the 4.6 in my 2013 and the Pedal Commander took care of that.

I love my 2015 DC 4.6L . For me it fits my needs (hauling anything other than a 4 wheeler trailer /small camper ) I get 16-17 mpg in mixed driving . I can get 18-19 no cruse on the hwy at 65 mph . the Cruze control on these things kill MPG. If your needs are good with 4.6 go with it , I came from a 4runner and it still feels like a beast to me . oh 93 K and no cam tower leak .

If your coming from a Tacoma and concerned about gas, I would suggest the 4.6..

I had a 4.6 DC for a year and traded for my current 5.7 DC. Biggest mistake. The 4.6 has plenty of power. I towed a 5k load with the 4.6, and it had power to spare. The 6 speed trans helps handle trailers as well as the motor’s power. My 4.6 had the tow package. The one downside to the 4.6 trucks is gearing. 4.10’s suck, it needs 4.30 minimum, 4.56 would have been more optimal.

That being said, do not buy a 4.6 for the mileage though. They basically get the same, as the truck pushes the exact same air area. My 4.6 averaged 14, 5.7 averages 13. Same tires. 1 mpg is almost nil

Buy a 4.6 if its a good condition truck woth everything else that you want.

It's a pretty hard call. If the two motors are that close in MPG, it is possible that the 4.6 is a bit overworked to push that heavy truck, where the 5.7 is probably more optimal for the load. I would read lots of MPG threads on both and get a stronger real life account of how they do on gas.

If they really are that close I would probably go 5.7. Either one will hurt after having no payment for a while.
