    Ok so I'm about to head up the mountains with my camper then turn right around the next week and head to the Outer Banks can't wait !! . Here's my question Keith over at Dirty Deeds once told me that the transmissions in the Tundras are the same ones used in the Hino box trucks and they are very tuff transmissions. I believe him on that but where is the transmission coolers on the New gen Tundras ? Id love to see the transmission temperatures but I think they left that out on the very informative headsup display . What do you guys think ? Any easy way to hook up a transmission temp guage etc , and where is the dang tranny cooler ;) ????

    On my 2012 it appears the trans cooler is part of the a/c condenser. The ultragauage shows trans temps 10 -15 degrees warmer than the Tacoma I traded.
    I am seeking additional info too.

    If you have the towing package, you have it.

    That's a nice camper. I haul one as well, about 6800lbs. I know mine has a trans cooler, at least according to the dealer, since I did get the towing package. But it would be nice to see the trans temp. Anyway to add something aftermarket ?

    You can use a Scan Guage. It will read trans temp on the Tundras. I use one on my 2015. Comes in handy when towing.

    From what I'm reading the 3rd Gen Tundras have a integrated transmission cooler and engine oil cooler , trying to verify that now ;)

    Also on another forum there is some chatter about a Android Torque app for your phone that you plug a Bluetooth device in your obd2 port that's monitors actual temperatures instead of a guage ....anyone got any data on this ?
    Thanks , yea I love it , wife really loves the kitchen in it . Its running about 7800 pds once I have everything in it for camping

    I use the scanTool blue tooth for all my vehicles with the Torque app. Works really well and has saved me tons in repair cost. I haven't touched the surface of its capabilities. Basically if your vehicle has a sensor/input you can monitor via the torque app.

    @MillsTRD14 I hadn't had it connected to my 16 yet but my 1997 Mercedes, 2007 Jeep patriot, 2007 Chevy p/u and ol faithful my first tundra 2007 DC TRD all have read and operated flawlessly. I can't recall any of them other than the Chevy showing trans temp. I also us another app called OBDlink because it has Mode$06 and Mode$09 test monitors and will read PID values (o2 sensors ect...) basically where I've benefitted from this particular app was trouble shooting an ABS fault on the Mercedes down to high resistance on the rear diff sensor and on the jeep for a throttle plate to gas pedal disagreement. In both cases these sensors were good as far as the system was concerned during initial start/run cycles but the values they were displaying were out of design limits which I found in wire diagrams using Google. There are two Torque apps one being free and the other wasn't. Maybe I paid 19.99 not sure but maybe that might retrieve more data? I'll hook my scan tool up on the 16 in the next couple of days and see if I can locate trans and oil temps.

    Ok well mine didn't work right away , I had to add another 2 sensor data points now it's working . Here is the information that worked on mine .
    For sensor 1 (Pan Temp):
    OBD2 Mode and PID: 2182
    Long Name: Transmission Fluid Temperature 1
    Short Name: Trans 1
    Minimum Value: 0.0
    Maximum value: 300.0
    Scale factor: x1
    Unit Type: °F
    Equation: ((((A*256)+B) * (7/100) – 400)/10)
    OBD Header to use: left blank

    For sensor 2 (Converter outlet temp):
    OBD2 Mode and PID: 2182
    Long Name: Transmission Fluid Temperature 2
    Short Name: Trans 2
    Minimum Value: 0.0
    Maximum value: 300.0
    Scale factor: x1
    Unit Type: °F
    Equation: ((((C*256)+D) * (7/100) – 400)/10)
    OBD Header to use: left blank

    So my temperature towing up black mountain never exceeded 210 but what's interesting is when your on flat land and overdrive kicks in it will go as high as 230 but soon as it downshifts and RPMS rise temperature drops rapidly between 190-210 . Pretty cool !!!

    In the manual it says to keep it in "S4" instead of "D" when towing. Is that to keep it cool? I'm a towing newb.

    * Car dock support
    * Graph data
    * MPG

    Ok, we just bought a 2016 Tundra, trading in our 2014 Tacoma. Pretty disappointed in transmission temps on the new Tundra, and we haven't even towed yet. Temps just driving around town or cruising on the freeway run from 185-220*. Those are unacceptable temps for towing, not to mention just driving around. I appears the transmission has two systems for temp control of the trans. One is back at the tail of the trans, where engine coolant is used to control temps on the trans. Also, it appears the transmission lines run up to the A/C condenser, perhaps being used for both the A/C and the trans. The biggest problem I see with the system after a brief look is the use of engine coolant for temp control. If those lines are not controlled with a thermostat, hot coolant, 190-212* will be heating the trans fluid to that temp. So no cooling of the fluid will start until the trans fluid temp exceeds the water temp. Does anyone know if the water lines to this heat exchanger are controlled by a separate thermostat? Secondly I question how efficient the A/C condenser that shares double duty with the transmission is at cooling. The temp differential between the transmission torque converter, the hottest temp sensor to the pan temp sensor is about 15-20 degrees. My 2014 Tacoma had a large B & M cooler I put on it and the temp differential with it at those two points was 25-33*. So all in all I'm disappointed in this system. Does anyone on the forum work as a Tundra Mechanic, and can you enlighten us on this system? Has anyone put a supplemental cooler on their Gen 3 Tundra? Has anyone disconnected the engine coolant portion of the system and seen improvement of heat reduction? And finally, what kind of transmission temps are people seeing towing heavy, i.e in excess of 7000 lbs? Thanks guys!

    While driving my trans temp usually mirrors the engine temps. When stopped, in gear, the trans temp can go above 220. Placing it in park cools it back down.
    Tundras are well engineered with nearly bullet proof components but I'm not overly comfortable with the spikes in trans temps.
    Gear cruncher on TW is a transmission guru....he may be able to shed some light on the subject.
    Note: under hood temps often exceed 140, when stopped, and that may contribute.

    Wondered the same thing....maybe that's why the A/C doesn't really get cold enough?Will keep an eye on this thread
