Looking at Upgrading

Anyone have a suggestion either way? I think I'm going to go with the Kings because I've heard good things about them. The Wheeler ones are OEM'd by Eibach if I understand correctly

Sorry for the trouble thus far. The standard coil springs can be adjusted to 2.375" of thread showing on your application.

We do offer a 700lb coil spring.

Thanks for the reply. I'm working with @Wheeler's Off-Road Inc to get some 14x700s. That's good to know on the specs.

 

So the new coils should be in tomorrow. Will I be able to just back off the adjustment ring to change the coils or do I need to get a compressor, and if so will a compressor from the local parts store work?

A spring compressor will be required to get the spring on & off.

 

FYI, compressor was not needed to remove the original coil but I will definitely be using one to put the new ones on.

The interior diameter of the new King coils is about 1/8" bigger than the original Icon coils. Will this be problematic?

 

The difference in diameter is not a cause for concern. It may just be a variance in manufacturing.

So, with the new 14" 700lb coils and the collar adjusted to 1" of thread showing I gained an inch of lift versus the extended coils (not sure the weight, they are 13" though) that came with the Icons with 2-1/8" of thread showing. I'm still not completely happy with tire clearance but will probably keep it as is right now due to time constraints. In the future though I will probably screw the ring down to 1-3/8" which is the max @Icon_Adrian recommends with these coils. If I need more I may go with some CB shims later on.

Today I am taking the truck in to get the 4R wheels installed which will give me a bit more BS so we'll see what that does, and I'll also be getting an alignment. I may have to swap out the Nitto's for something with less side tread or even go to 275s if these other adjustments don't give me enough room. I also trimmed the pinch weld and installed the SuperBumps.

@Casper421 I'm curious to see what you think once you get your Icons installed with those Coopers. Are you planning on just 1/4' shims?

Here are some before and after:

 

One 1/4” on the passenger and 2 on the drivers side. I should be able to crank the co’s enough to fit the 285/75’s. I will have to trim and cut a lot but I knew that going into this project. I’m scared of the rear height with the new springs I have ordered. I don’t think the truck will sit level unless I have the rack and tepui on.

 

Plus full extension on the COs. Ok. I think I need to find out how to do the trimming and cutting because I would like to keep this tire size.

The new t4r wheels should help with fitment but 285’s are a basic size most run easily with 2-3” of lift. How much lift did you get from the co’s?

 

I'm hoping so, I'll have an update on that soon. Well, like a proper genius I forgot to measure the stock setup which also had a 1-1/2" spacer, so I'm not sure. Honestly doesn't look like much lift in the front but the back looks great. That's why I'll wind up going to 1-3/8" of thread showing.

 

Here it is with max extension on the coils. I gained an inch of height with that last 3/8" of adjustment.

 

How has the ride been since you increased to 1-3/8” of thread? How do the 700 coils feel?

 

What does the upper arm angle look like when your truck is on the ground now? That would give a pretty good idea on lift.

Bummer about the springs. My buddy has those on his double cab but his don't compress that much, maybe because his rear isn't lifted.

 

The ride is a bit stiffer, but not bad at all. Unfortunately I haven't been able to do any offroading since I increased them so I'm curious how they will feel.

Yeah, I just was not happy with those. I believe @Rheywood456 runs 650s, though. This reminds me, I should put mine up for sale here.

 

I would bet you are right between 2.5 and 3" lift from that angle.

 

I had to crank my 650lb coils down quite a bit to get get up close to 2.75”. I then let out some out and added a CB shim on each side. It rides soooo nice now. Plus the height is perfect. The rear is a tad higher with the Archive Garage Deaver Pack but that is how I like it.

I think so, really wish I had remembered to measure previous. However, it did have 1.5 spacer blocks on the front which I removed.

Makes sense. I think letting them down and adding a shim or two would give it a nicer ride. I'll probably do that down the road (yep) but am happy with it for now. My mechanic said he really had to crank their big commercial compressor to get that last 3/8" so I know they are crazy stiff.

Yeah, that CTW lady dropped a page of product specs and group buy pricing for their UCA's right before my post.

Your upper arm angle is just a bit less than mine and I'm just over 3" of lift (soon to be lower). I think any tire clearance issues could be from alignment and lift gained actually, as you go up the arms effectively bring the spindles closer to the body. You might have been close to rubbing before and that little change in clearance is presenting itself.

 

Mine does. When adjusting it the eye bolt snapped so I went to Home Depot and bought a new longer zinc eye bolt. Worked great.
