I use Toyota 90915-YZZD3, it's a little longer than the ones at the parts store and cheaper. Local dealer has them for about $5 or you can get a 10 pack on Amazon for $46.

no, because it's not a Toyota-specific test. as you can see from the link, the article was posted on gmtruckcentral.com. They do however test ACdelco, which is GM OEM, and Motorcraft, which is Ford OEM.

Double check your manual if you have it, but my 2002 V8 4.7L capacity is 6.5 quarts (5w-30).

The Toy filters I use are the YZZZD-3 which is spec’d in manual, as well.

yikes, just because it's bigger doesn't mean it's better guys. Filters are application specific and things like the bypass valve can differ and wreak havoc to your engine, or worse yet, no oil to your engine. Just stick with the manual's recommendation.

IF 5.25 is not a typo, you are still a qt low. I do not recommend draining out anything just yet. I suggest you double check that everything is as it should be....level gnd, make sure oil has settled if recently ran, remove dipstick, wipe clean and recheck. Something is not right if what you say is indeed true.

I'm don't use any but OEM filters, but the smaller NAPA filter shouldn't have much effect on your dipstick reading.

Did you start the engine after the change?

Starting and idling the engine is the last step in an oil change to check for normal oil pressure and leaks at the filter and drain plug. When the engine is started, the empty oil filter and empty oil galleries must first be filled (maybe 1+ quart). Oil pressure at the dash gauge will be delayed a few seconds while the oil pump is filling the filter and oil galleries. This is normal and not a concern; the bearings will be lubricated by an oil film held in the bearings by surface tension. If canister filters are mounted near vertical, it's good practice to pre-fill the filter as much as possible before installation. This shortens the fill time, and no oil pressure time, dramatically. After the engine is shut off, the dipstick reading will be lower when you recheck.

Not sure whats going on with your situation. Bubba and Lakeman make valid points above. Maybe you didn’t drain all the contents or measure correctly?

Start up the engine and spin it around the block. Come home and park on a LEVEL surface and check the level with engine OFF for 5 minutes.

To each their own, but there is that saying you get what you pay for. I like to save money also but I would rather find a deal on Toyota filters before I trust my engine to a .79 cent oil filter.

I think I remember reading about this .79 filter which was highly rated BTW IIRC.

It was a close out deal and they went fast.

Anyways I like the Toy filters (YZZZD-3) at $4-5, but if I decided to experiment I’d do the larger style Mobil Filter (which isn’t spec’d but fits regardless A-301?).
