Handgun mounting options.

Need some ideas on different handgun mounting in the truck. Something solid yet easy to get to,and the more out of sight the better.

 

On your person is the best place.

 

It is when not in truck.

 

When not in the truck I actually hide mine. It's not "mounted". Buy a small safe and slide it under the seat with a cable.. Guns are stolen from vehicles every day. Easy to get to and out of site is a challenge. Hard to have it both ways.

X2 the best place is on you. I hear stories of people leaving, or forgetting their weapons in their vehicle and come out and their truck got broken into. Now their weapons are in the hands of some douchebag. But I do like the magnet thingy if you do decide on a mount. Jmho.

 

I don't leave the gun in the truck when I get out. It's on me. But when I'm in it, it seems that it would be much faster to access it if it was mounted somewhere as opposed to trying to unholster it under a bunch of clothes and leaning forward while sitting. Plus if you lean forward to fast the seatbelt locks up which creates another issue.

 

There are a lot of good options. Those magnets are the most affordable and work well. I just prefer the trigger to be covered.

I put a center console safe in, if I am somewhere can't have it on me i put it in the safe, out of site and locked.

 

In theory. Make sure you practice this 500 times then to become proficient. I tried not carrying it on me once in the truck, but my natural and practiced muscle memory is going to my waist for my gun. Just my 2 cents.

During an in-vehicle pistol stage at a match, I noticed how much more difficult and awkward it is to safely draw while seated and buckled up, especially if carrying at the 4-5 o’clock position or appendix carry. I came away from that stage learning that on-body carry while seated and buckled sucks and that it would be better to have the handgun secured somewhere else for easy access. I suppose with practice, one could always get better, but if secured in a hidden but easily accessible area in the vehicle, the draw will probably still be easier and safer than from on-body carry. With that said, I think the point about forgetting the handgun when getting out of the vehicle is a valid one. I guess there are pros and cons with both.

That looks convenient. My concern would be that it’s not concealed. We can open carry with a license in TX, but only if it’s holstered on our body. We can also have a handgun in the car without a license, but it has to be concealed.

 

Just curious I wonder how many people have shot holes in their vehicle with that.i'm gonna stick with L.E. Guys and keep it on me. That's where I practice from. When your in a stressful situation you wanna stick with what ya know. That's just me tho. Go with whatever makes ha comfortable

 

No, you actually get a handgun and permit when you pass ur driving test.

 

I would agree the best place is on your person. If I am going to a federal building that I know I can't carry, I leave it home for that trip. Working EMS I saw what happens to things in vehicles during accidents. Non of the magnet mounts or velcro ones I have seen would hold up in crash and I would rather not have my pistol bouncing around in my vehicle. I ran a call once just outside of Vegas on off duty LAPD officer he had his firearm in the center console and rolled the vehicle in the center median. We found the pistol in the breakdown lane on the opposite side of the highway.
If you train doing draws from a seated position and are use to the motion it can be effective. The one thing you don't want to do is try and lean forward and lock up the belt. You want to more or less slide your hips down creating space between you and the seat so our arm has room to move back. If you have to reach forward to grab a pistol mounted under the dash you're portable going to lock the belt up and not be able to reach it at all. Just my opinion.

 

Just a 4 hour class, target and multiple choice test, fingerprint and background check and a fee (forget how much it is now, but used to be over $100). Good for 5 years. Pay fee to renew.

 

I would think a console or under seat safe would be the best option if you don’t keep it on your person while out of your vehicle.

As far as in vehicle, given the difficulty drawing a gun while holstered on your person, id keep it close by with easy access.

 

Excellent points and info. I’m guessing you’re statistically more likely to get in a crash than get carjacked or attacked by road rage. So it’s probably best to keep it on your person despite the added difficulty of drawing while seated and buckled.

In your experience, did you ever see a gun loose at an accident scene that had been in one of those center console safes?

 

No I never saw one that came loose if it was secured in the safe at the time. The only problem with it being in the safe is when it is needed it will take some time to get. If this video plays you can see once they call threat we had two shoots on target within two seconds while seated and seat belt on. That is slow compared to a regular draw but with practice you can get down sub twos. Later that day I was doing low ones.

Very similar to the in-vehicle pistol stage I shot, but my times were much slower. You guys are good. Anyway, I tried 3 o-clock, 4 o'clock position and appendix carry and they all sucked. Reloads were just as bad and slow. I was also using an older style USGI holster with the metal clips and cover flap (needed the flap to keep mud out when doing the mud-crawl stage), and the clips kept getting undone, resulting in the holster twisting off. That stage was a real eye-opener for me, especially considering how much time I spend driving around in a vehicle.

 

Yeah having the right gear makes a big difference. Most of us have stuff custom made for our needs. For that one pistol I think I have about eight different holsters depending on what we are doing at that particular time.
But the main thing is training. Sometimes I spend 15-20 hrs a day in vehicles so I spend a lot of time training it with my team. If you have a blue gun, SERT pistol or just dummy rounds most of it you can practice doing dry fire parked in your garage. Every day I do about 8-10 reps of draw and reloads when I kit up for work.

 

No doubt. Looking at your video, I could tell you guys practice a lot drawing while in a vehicle. I have other holsters, but because of the mud-crawling stage, I decided to use that old USGI one to better protect it from the mud. By the time we got to the vehicle stage, we were all wet and caked in mud from head to toe, and the vehicle seats were a muddy mess from all the competitors. I'm sure that played a factor as well. Your advice to practice draws while in a vehicle is well taken. That stage was a good learning experience for me.
